AI's influence on procurement

Patrick Reymann, Research Director for Procurement Enterprise Applications at IDC, was a key speaker at the event held at Miami’s Turnberry Resort. He encouraged participants to differentiate between hype and actionable technology.

Patrick emphasised the seismic impact of AI, predicting it as "the biggest computer industry transition of our generation". He termed this period as this generation's "iPhone moment".

The importance of understanding AI's practical implications in procurement cannot be overstated—Patrick suggested a balance between adopting new tools and maintaining realistic expectations, warning against deceptive terms like "AI-native".

When discussing AI's role in procurement, Patrick stated: “It wasn't born with the birth of Gen AI.”

Highlighting the uncertain future of procurement jobs due to AI and automation, Patrick cited a Deloitte study indicating substantial changes in procurement roles.

He urged professionals to familiarise themselves with technological advances to harness them effectively, saying: “Procurement professionals must kick the tires — let's become familiar with what's available out there. How can we leverage this for our use cases?”

JAGGAER's strategic product roadmap

Jon Lawrence, Chief Product Officer at JAGGAER, presented the company's future vision focusing on supplier intelligence, source-to-contract and procure-to-pay. Intertwined with this roadmap was JAGGAER’s introduction of JAI, designed to revolutionise how procurement processes function.

Jon outlined the roadmap’s foundation on user experience, AI and automation, risk and resilience and interoperability.

He said: “AI is not necessarily a feature, but more of an enabler.”

The approach illustrates JAGGAER's commitment to integrating AI as a core component rather than an add-on, providing a more holistic procurement solution.

Customer feedback plays a crucial role in JAGGAER’s product strategy.

Jon added: â€œWe’ve had a lot of feedback... on not only the importance of, but the true need to improve the user experience.”

Incorporating this feedback leads not only to improved efficiency but also to stronger organisational alliances and streamlined supplier interactions.

Significant innovations include tools such as “Smart Quote”, which harnesses AI to recommend suppliers and streamline the sourcing process.

Jon continued: “It's about putting more guardrails, more controls, allowing the human to be in the loop.” This implies thoughtful governance as AI is leveraged within procurement processes.

Making procurement accessible

Alastair McMullan, JAGGAER’s VP of Product Management, revealed a major feature in version 25.3: the Guided Intake Experience.

The tool simplifies procurement for all users, enabling even those with little experience to efficiently manage procurement processes.

Alastair explained: “Within a few simple questions, users will be directed to a pre-negotiated supplier contract. No hunting, no guesswork.”

This innovation highlights JAGGAER’s dedication to user empowerment and accessibility, ensuring a smooth procurement process regardless of user expertise. Additionally, Alastair introduced a process orchestration prototype designed to optimise workflow management.

Alastair concluded: “This is more than a feature. It’s transforming the way we think about procurement. It’s guided, it’s intuitive and it’s aligned with how users actually behave.”

This strategic approach underscores JAGGAER’s commitment to revolutionising procurement, making it an indispensable tool in the modern procurement landscape.
