Grupo Bimbo & Aeroméxico: SAF to Drive Decarbonisation

Grupo Bimbo has formed a strategic alliance with Grupo Aeroméxico to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in its corporate and business travel in Latin America.
This alliance, which is regarded as the first of its sort in the region, will see Grupo Bimbo and Aeroméxico combine capabilities, vision and commitment to accelerate emissions reduction through the use of SAF, joining efforts to move toward more sustainable aviation.
Emissions reductions will be credited through internationally recognised mechanisms for SAF allocation and traceability.
“At Grupo Bimbo, we believe that sustainability must be integrated into every business and sourcing decision ”
A shared commitment to net zero
David Hernández, Global Director of Procurement at Grupo Bimbo, says: "At Grupo Bimbo, we believe that sustainability must be integrated into every business and sourcing decision.
"This alliance with Aeroméxico demonstrates how collaboration with strategic partners can help us reduce emissions beyond our direct operations and make tangible progress toward our net zero emissions goal by 2050."
Both companies involved will help to contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gases. In regards to Aeroméxico, that will be done through the reduction of Scope 1 emissions generated from fuel use, while Grupo Bimbo will reduce its Scope 3 emissions generated by business travel.
The combined work supports the long-term decarbonisation objectives of both organisations and consolidates their leadership in corporate sustainability.
It also places a marker for the aviation industry throughout Mexico and Latin America, as it showcases the commitment and vision held by both companies to integrate sustainability within their business models and corporate strategies, while also adopting tangible solutions to move toward a low-carbon economy.
- SAF offers up to an 80% cut in carbon emissions compared with conventional fossil fuel
- Both Grupo Bimbo and Aeroméxico are working toward net zero emissions by 2050
- This is described as the first alliance of its kind in the Latin American region
- The alliance covers corporate and business travel specifically, not wider operational travel
Setting a precedent for the region
Karen Farías, Director of Sustainability & ESG at Aeroméxico, adds: “This alliance reflects how collaboration can accelerate the transition toward more sustainable aviation in Mexico and Latin America, driving concrete actions to reduce emissions in key activities such as business travel.
“The transition will only be possible through a network of allies committed to significantly reducing the environmental impact across their entire value chain and advancing toward long-term goals for 2050. This agreement sets a precedent in the region and demonstrates that it is possible to move toward concrete, measurable solutions aligned with global climate challenges.”
The alliance will not just provide emissions reduction but also reflects both companies' commitment to investing in Mexico to increase the use and development of more sustainable fuels.
In regards to Aeroméxico, this initiative will allow it to carry on its work towards its net zero emissions goal by 2050, strengthening its leadership as one of the main drivers of the viability of sustainable aviation fuels in the region.
“The transition will only be possible through a network of allies committed to significantly reducing the environmental impact across their entire value chain ”
The role of sustainable aviation fuel
Alejandra Vázquez, Global Director of Sustainability at Grupo Bimbo, says: "We have a clear goal for 2050: for Grupo Bimbo to be a company with net zero carbon emissions. To achieve this, initiatives such as the one we have today with Aeroméxico add a grain of flour to this goal, which requires the joint effort of all stakeholders across our value chain.”
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is currently regarded as the leading available solution for reducing emissions from air transport, offering up to an 80% cut in carbon emissions compared with conventional fossil fuel. It is produced from renewable feedstocks such as organic waste and holds the necessary certifications for use, making it compatible with current airline fleets.
This initiative aims to strengthen a culture of sustainability, both within organisations and across wider society, while raising awareness of the importance of decarbonisation. It also forms part of Grupo Bimbo's broader decarbonisation strategy, which spans multiple areas of the value chain, from the field to logistics and energy.
