Milan Nedeljković, Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW AG, says the new investment signifies the company’s goal of procuring continued US operations

The BMW Group is expanding its footprint in the United States through a US$1.75bn investment in its South Carolina operations alongside the construction of a new facility.

This funding is dedicated to producing the company's first US-built EV models, which in turn creates valuable opportunities for suppliers to benefit from the project.

Inside BMW’s facility operations

Serving as the global epicenter for BMW’s operations, Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina is undergoing an expansion alongside the construction of Plant Woodruff, which is also located in the state.

These developments will enable suppliers to benefit directly from the advanced technology implemented at each location. Also, BMW’s innovative ‘BMW iFACTORY’ concept, which is already operational at Plant Spartanburg, will also be deployed at Plant Woodruff.

According to the vehicle manufacturer, BMW iFACTORY is built on efficiency, sustainability and digitalisation. The AI-centred modality utilises automation to streamline the supply chain process, with the use of digital twins, 3D virtual simulations and AI-powered robots.

To automate quality processes, BMW’s Artificial Intelligence Quality Next (AIQX) platform leverages a network of sensors and camera systems across the entire production line while Figure AI robots manage repetitive operations, including cell module production.

BMW’s X model production

Since 1994, the Plant Spartanburg facility has produced over 7.3 million vehicles, serving as the manufacturing site for BMW's X models. The upcoming X5 model will represent a historic milestone for the company as the first to feature five drivetrain technologies. This comprehensive lineup includes internal combustion, battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, diesel and hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric in the near future.

Production of the new iX5 model is scheduled to commence in October 2026, marking it as the first fully electric BMW vehicle built within the US. Additionally, BMW plans to assemble at least six fully electric BMW models by 2030, incorporating high-voltage batteries from Plant Woodruff.

C-Suite executives explained the importance of the popular car models being built at its South Carolina facilities.

"The all new BMW X5 demonstrates our belief that innovation and customer choice go hand in hand," says Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America.
