BMW Group has made digitalisation – especially through Gen AI – a top strategic priority for its purchasing and supplier network

The BMW Group is taking its digitalisation efforts in purchasing and its supplier network to the next level using generative AI (Gen AI), with an intelligent multi-agent system – BMW Group AIconic Agent – allowing more efficient information procurement and optimised decision-making.

In what represents a strategic priority for BMW, the company is focusing specifically on Gen AI to improve efficiency and long-term viability.

It also forms part of the organisation's accelerated digital transformation, which includes developing innovative applications and strategic cooperation with the BMW Group's IT hub in Romania.

Hendrik Lang, SVP Strategy, Digitalization and Sustainability, Purchasing and Supplier Network at BMW Group, says: "At the BMW Group, we consider AI to be more than just a technological innovation. We see it as a key element of the digital transformation. Empowering our people to use AI technologies is our top priority."

A group-wide AI platform at BMW supports customised applications to optimise processes, increase efficiency and create innovative solutions. AI serves as a tool that completes certain tasks faster or automates subtasks, giving employees more freedom for creative and innovative thinking.

Romanian tech hub powers BMW's AI expertise

Just like building one of its famous cars, the BMW Group is creating a strategic AI expertise and developing specific AI applications for the purchasing and supplier network at its IT hub in Romania.

By the end of 2025, the location will be home to a team of experts working on cutting-edge Gen AI applications for internal processes worldwide.

Opened in the thriving tech centre of Cluj-Napoca in summer 2024 as a joint venture of the BMW Group and NTT DATA Romania, BMW TechWorks Romania is tasked with consistently expanding the BMW Group's Europe-based software expertise according to long-term demands.

BMW TechWorks Romania is closely integrated into the BMW Group's global development and innovation landscape and benefits from Romania's robust IT and software industry.

AIconic: The multi-agent system transforming procurement

BMW Group Purchasing is also on the road to the development and implementation of internal AI applications.

Gen AI tools including Knowledge Navigator, Offer Analyst and Tender Assistant were introduced in purchasing as early as 2024. These tools work as a central knowledge database which assists in the analysis and comparison of supplier offers as well as tender creation and management.

For example, Offer Analyst can perform repetitive tasks and significantly reduce the time required for each offer.

What's more, BMW recently deployed AIconic, an advanced multi-agent AI system for its purchasing and supplier network.

This innovative solution transforms information discovery and utilisation by combining sophisticated natural language processing with intelligent algorithms. AIconic delivers rapid, precise search results tailored to individual user needs. By integrating diverse data sources, it provides comprehensive information access that far exceeds previous search capabilities. The system has gained remarkable traction, with 1,800 active users conducting 10,000 searches since launch.

"AIconic significantly increases employee efficiency and productivity while setting new standards for AI usage," adds Markus Kronen, Head of GenAI in BMW's Purchasing and Supplier Network.

The platform currently features 10 specialised agents covering quality management, purchasing data and process support. BMW continues enhancing AIconic, prioritising its evolution from a reactive search tool to a proactive assistant. Future iterations will autonomously monitor supply chains, generate reports, identify optimisation opportunities, recommend actions and automate processes.

To maximise AI benefits, BMW provides comprehensive digital training and dedicated innovation spaces for employees across all levels, fostering digital literacy throughout the organisation. Clear governance frameworks guide both internal AI development and external AI procurement.

As one of BMW's pioneering multi-agent implementations on its central AI platform, AIconic has become the standard solution in procurement and demonstrates the potential for intelligent agent systems across the entire organisation.
