SAP India has launched a social procurement initiative aimed at empowering social enterprises by embedding them into corporate value chains.

The programme reflects SAP's commitment to sustainable growth and aligns closely with India's development priorities.

The initiative comes at a critical time, with the World Economic Forum estimating that India has more than two million social enterprises, nearly a quarter of which are led by women. These enterprises work across key sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, clean energy and financial inclusion. They embody sustainable business practices, prioritise inclusion and stimulate local entrepreneurship.

Through social procurement, SAP seeks to encourage corporate buyers to source from these social enterprises, fostering economic and environmental impact while supporting large organisations to meet their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), diversity and sustainability targets. The practice is relatively new but holds immense potential, as evidence suggests integrating social enterprises into supply chains yields measurable social and business benefits.

Aligning procurement with India's national priorities

SAP's initiative is closely aligned with key Indian government programmes such as the Government eMarketplace (GeM), Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), Make in India, and the promotion of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). These frameworks create opportunities for local businesses and ensure that procurement practices support broader development goals.

  • Promoting sustainable manufacturing

Sustainability lies at the core of SAP's efforts. By partnering with organisations that focus on ethical and responsible production, SAP aims to promote the creation of environmentally friendly and socially responsible goods.

This focus on sustainability allows global brands to procure products and services that meet both high ethical standards and the growing consumer demand for sustainable options.

  • Supporting local innovation

Social entrepreneurs are vital drivers of change, and SAP is investing in their growth. By collaborating with local incubators, the company helps social enterprises scale their ideas and create sustainable businesses.

Over the years, SAP has supported more than 100 such organisations, enabling them to expand their reach and contribute significantly to their communities. This hands-on involvement demonstrates SAP's long-term commitment to fostering innovation and inclusive economic growth.

  • Strengthening farmer networks

India's agricultural sector plays a critical role in the nation's economy and SAP’s initiative extends support to small farmers through FPOs.

By improving their readiness for procurement, SAP helps these groups access new markets, ensuring fair and stable incomes. Training programmes for FPO leaders also empower them with knowledge of market operations and management.

SAP further supports these organisations by providing mentorship, guidance and access to resources, ensuring that their products are market-ready. This holistic approach creates jobs, improves livelihoods and strengthens India's agricultural base.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring that good, ethical and sustainable, corporate practices are woven into the fabric of business," comments Manish Prasad, President and Managing Director for the SAP Indian Subcontinent.

"By collaborating with social enterprises and nurturing alliances across our ecosystem, we can transform procurement decisions into an opportunity to uplift communities, generate jobs and drive sustainable and equitable growth across the communities we operate. Social procurement has the potential to be a transformative tool to improve people’s lives.”

Transforming business through purpose

As part of this initiative, SAP India, in collaboration with Sattva Consulting, has unveiled a report titled ‘Social Procurement: Paving the Way for Business Resilience and Sustainability’.

The report emphasises the importance of social procurement as a strategic priority for Indian businesses, demonstrating its potential to deliver long-term societal and economic benefits.“

The study highlights social procurement’s potential to unlock economic value by engaging social enterprises, FPOs and MSMEs, fostering resilience and inclusivity in supply chains," adds Srikrishna Sridhar Murthy, CEO and Co-Founder of Sattva.

"Effective implementation requires a comprehensive operating model with cross-functional and cross-departmental collaboration and infrastructure development to enhance the discoverability and scale of social enterprises, supported by investments from stakeholders like philanthropic foundations and DFIs.”

The findings encourage corporates to deepen their investments in social enterprises, emphasising the value of impactful partnerships in creating resilience and new opportunities. By advocating for a structured approach to social procurement, the report positions it as a key lever for business sustainability.

SAP India's social procurement initiative is more than just a corporate programme; it is a commitment to responsible business transformation.

By fostering sustainability, supporting local innovation and empowering farmers, SAP contributes to India's growth agenda while ensuring meaningful societal impact.
