Maureen O’Shea, Supply Chain & Sustainability Partner, Baringa

The Supply Chain Sustainability Forum

Deep diving into best practices when it comes to establishing a sustainability culture within businesses, dealing with variations across borders, and challenges in working with franchisees three leading executives take to the stage at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE to discuss supply chain sustainability.

Panelists:

  • Mike Brooman, Head of Supply Chain, Community Fibre
  • Maureen O’Shea, Supply Chain & Sustainability Partner, Baringa
  • Phil Halanen, Head of Sourcing & Sustainability, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts

Implementing shadow carbon pricing and carbon impact modelling

One notable discussion point among the panellists includes the implementation of shadow carbon pricing and carbon impact modelling.

O'Shea highlights the benefits of incorporating shadow carbon prices into fees, allowing a clear evaluation of carbon impact during the final valuation process.

O'Shea also discussed the benefits of tools such as Coupa and Llamasoft for modelling carbon impact in logistics to minimise miles in the network and as well as optimisation to rescue carbon impacts.

"Sustainability is either a real part of your business on the scorecard or it's a side project and nothing's going to happen,” says O’Shea.

Data and the Internet of Things (IoT)

When it comes to the benefits of technology implementations and sustainability, Brooman highlights the significance of data and the Internet of Things (IoT). He breaks down the use of IoT to monitor and collect data on vehicle emissions, engine temperatures, and fuel efficiency. Such data can help with the early identification of issues and enable proactive decision-making.

Expanding on Brooman’s comments Hallinan provides insights into franchises using data to measure utility consumption at property levels, in order to better understand and manage carbon footprints.

Adopting a data-driven approach helps franchises make informed decisions, implement management actions, and measure the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives.

"Consistency and measurement is really key. So from a sustainability perspective, one of the things that I'm trying to do through our procurement programs is ensure that the procurement programs have clear sustainability objectives,” he says.

Strategy and leadership

While the above offers many benefits, it is important to not forget the vital role strategy and leadership play. O’Shea highlights that data can provide valuable insights, but leadership intent is crucial for driving the sustainability initiative forward. She stresses the need for top-down commitment, including leadership intent, inclusion in scorecards, and allocated budgets.

Halanen and Brooman also touch on the need for strategy when it comes to technology implementation, stressing that technology alone is not the solution. Successful implementation requires a well-thought-out strategy and buy-in from stakeholders.
