Fair Trade USA, along with its partners, has generated US$100m in Community Development Funds to benefit factory workers around the world

Fair Trade USA and its partners have generated US$100m in Community Development Funds – a significant milestone that directly benefits factory workers and their communities throughout the world.

Fair Trade USA, a tax-exempt nonprofit organisation, is the leading certifier of Fair Trade products in North America. It offers award-winning, rigorous and globally recognised sustainable sourcing certification programmes that improve livelihoods, protect the environment and build resilient, transparent supply chains.

The Fair Trade Certified label on a product signifies that it was made according to stringent Fair Trade standards. Fair Trade USA is building an innovative model of responsible business, conscious consumerism and shared value to eliminate poverty and enable sustainable development for farmers, workers, their families and communities around the world.

When there is a purchase of a Fair Trade Certified product, it contributes to Community Development Funds, enabling farmers and workers to invest in projects that address their greatest needs.

Workers decide democratically how funds are spent, so projects are diverse in scope and impact. Many workers choose to use funds on education, healthcare initiatives, business development and food distribution.

Community Development Funds also include environmental initiatives like land restoration and expanded agroforestry practices that enhance soil carbon storage—now generating high-quality, verified carbon credits for additional income.

Fair Trade partners also see certification build trust with consumers, who are increasingly looking to support brands with strong commitments to ethics and sustainability.

Factory programme transforms global workplace standards

Since launching its Factory Programme in 2010, Fair Trade USA has certified more than 100 factories worldwide, all of which meet rigorous standards.

Fair Trade Certified factories ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, increased economic opportunity and Community Development Funds for workers to invest in building thriving communities.

"This milestone is a testament to what's possible when businesses prioritise people and the planet," says Felipe Arango, CEO of Fair Trade USA.

Fair Trade USA partners have looked to consistently raise the bar for what it means to conduct responsible, fair and sustainable business.

Fair Trade USA's factory brand partners who have been instrumental in reaching the US$100m milestone include Arc'teryx, Boll & Branch, Cotopaxi, e.l.f., Eileen Fisher, HAE Now, J Crew, Known Supply, Madewell, Mightly, PACT, Patagonia, Peak Design, Terra Thread, Williams Sonoma, Inc., West Elm, Pottery Barn and more.

Pioneering climate justice through carbon economy access

Fair Trade USA is also working alongside Acorn, which is an initiative of Rabobank, which will expand fair access to the carbon economy for smallholder coffee and cocoa farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The carbon economy is growing, but too often the farmers who are on the frontlines of climate change are left out of the return on the investments that they have made to build resiliency.

Carbon credits have emerged as a powerful tool to combat greenhouse gas emissions while holding companies and individuals accountable for their environmental impact. These tradable permits that offset carbon footprints create valuable additional income for farmers, ensuring their inclusion in the carbon economy's benefits.

Fair Trade USA's 26-year legacy has consistently increased income for farmers, workers and fishers. Their Fair Trade Certified label guarantees fair compensation, environmental protection and safe working conditions.

Acorn's farmer-first approach ensures 80% of carbon credit proceeds go directly to farmers, who retain full ownership of their data.

Their Carbon Removal Units (CRUs) emphasise agroforestry, encouraging farmers to plant trees that improve soil quality and crop yields. This model helps coffee and cocoa farmers not only preserve forests but actively regenerate landscapes, enhance soil health and diversify their income streams.

Unlike standard carbon credits focused on emission prevention, Acorn specialises in carbon removal through measurable, traceable, nature-based solutions. Their system offers both offsetting (allowing companies to balance emissions elsewhere) and insetting (enabling traders and roasters to purchase CRUs from farmers within their own supply chain).

The Acorn-Fair Trade USA partnership represents a significant step toward climate justice, ensuring farmers—who disproportionately suffer from climate change impacts—gain equitable access to economic opportunities in the carbon economy.
