Aggreko & Harmony Gold: Powering Renewable Hybrid Power

Aggreko has finalised a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with international mining company Harmony Gold for the Eva Copper Mine Project in Northwest Queensland, paving the way for the development of Australia’s largest off-grid renewable hybrid power facility.
The PPA (with a minimum term of 15 years) will see Aggreko build, own and operate the renewable hybrid power facility, supplying safe, reliable and lower carbon energy to support the construction and operation of Harmony’s new copper mine.
Aggreko is a global leader in engineered energy and temperature solutions. It designs, deploys and optimises the flexible energy and temperature solutions that are essential to its customers’ operations.
Aggreko works across all major industries and brings deep sector expertise to shaping solutions around its customers’ needs. It uses its experience working in demanding environments and complex applications to engineer reliable, efficient and sustainable solutions that meet its customers’ needs, from critical emergencies to long-term energy security.
Driving innovation in large-scale hybrid solutions
Showcasing the next generation of large-scale hybrid energy solutions, the Aggreko renewable hybrid power facility will integrate low-emissions thermal generation with extensive solar and battery storage infrastructure, providing Harmony with a resilient and future-focused energy platform.
Aggreko AusPac Managing Director, George Whyte, said the project highlights Aggreko’s growing leadership in Australia’s hybrid and renewable energy landscape: “This is a milestone for Aggreko and Australian mining.
“The scale of this renewable hybrid power station and the level of integration between solar, battery storage and thermal generation set a new benchmark for off-grid energy.
"Our long-term agreement reflects Aggreko’s commitment to partnering with industry to deliver innovative, lower emission energy solutions that are both commercially and operationally robust.”
- Net zero emissions from facilities and operations by 2035
- 30% reduction in the emissions intensity of energy solutions by 2030
These environmental goals align with Aggreko’s commitment to ethical transparency, community investment and workforce development.
Upon completion, the project will be one of Australia’s most advanced energy hubs, establishing Aggreko as a premier Independent Power Producer (IPP) for the resources sector.

Technical specifications and regional impact
The Eva Copper Mine Project renewable hybrid power facility will include:
- 104 MVA thermal power facility with flexibility to scale
- 118 MWp solar farm
- 250 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
This integration maximises renewable energy use while lowering fuel dependency and emissions throughout the mine’s lifespan. Aggreko and Harmony are also exploring future wind integration and grid connectivity to ensure the system evolves alongside the project’s needs.
Beyond energy, the facility will drive regional growth by creating jobs and supporting local suppliers in Cloncurry and Mount Isa. Once live, this scalable solution will provide the Eva Copper Mine with a dependable power supply that balances peak renewable performance with the rigorous demands of 24/7 mining operations.
