How Adflex and Coupa Integration Streamlines AP Automation

Digital B2B payments specialist Adflex has embarked on a collaboration with spend management firm Coupa, aiming to revolutionise payment automation in procurement.
This partnership is set to transform virtual card transactions for corporate entities by integrating Adflex's Straight-Through Processing technology with Coupa's AI-driven total spend management platform.
By automating the reading of virtual card information directly from emails, the need for suppliers to manually enter transaction details is eliminated, thus enhancing efficiency.
Previously, suppliers manually processed payments after receiving virtual card details via email from buyers, who initiated the transactions through Coupa's system.
This integration reverses the workflow, as Adflex's technology extracts card data from emails, facilitating payment execution autonomously and relieving suppliers from manual handling.
Technology reduces compliance burden
In the realm of procurement, this automated system plays a crucial role in mitigating the PCI-DSS compliance burden for suppliers by excluding direct card data handling.
This compliance solution not only streamlines operations but also ensures secure financial record updates. Buyers retain control over payment timings while enjoying the benefits of automated reconciliation, tackling supplier acceptance challenges that have previously hampered virtual card scalability.
Coupa's Bill Wardwell notes the expanding use of virtual cards for more than convenience, citing strategic benefits like improved cash flow, security and revenue from rebates.
âWe're seeing a growing number of customers turn to virtual cards to pay suppliersânot just for convenience, but to unlock real strategic value: stronger cash flow, enhanced security, streamlined reconciliation and meaningful rebate revenue,â Bill says.
However, the integration hurdles and supplier acceptance issues have remained obstacles in scaling these programs efficiently.
âHowever, challenges around supplier acceptance and process integration often stand in the way of scaling these programs effectively,â Bill adds.
Working capital optimisation for procurement
The partnership's strategy also focuses on optimising working capital for both buyers and suppliers in procurement operations. Virtual card payments prolong the period within which buyers can manage their liabilities while promptly settling transactions for suppliers, thereby eliminating the traditional cash collection process.
This dual advantage supports working capital optimisation on both ends, a sentiment echoed by Bill: âVirtual cards have the dual benefit of extending days payable outstanding, which maximises working capital, while minimising the supplier's days sales outstanding and removing the cost of cash collection â a 'win-win' for both parties,â he explains.
This system also aligns with environmental objectives by decreasing reliance on physical payment cards, aligning with responsible environmental stewardship, as noted by Bills.
Broadening market access and adoption
The collaboration has extensive implications for broadening the adoption of digital procurement solutions across markets, particularly facilitated by Barclaycard's exclusive access in the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
This partnership is reflective of a broader industry trend towards payment automation, allowing businesses to streamline manual processes while maintaining control over transaction security.
The demand for virtual cards is increasing as companies seek more efficient working capital management and reconciliation processes.
Coupa's platform, powered by AI, offers insights into corporate expenditure for optimising procurement processes. The integration with Adflex extends these capabilities to payment execution, creating a seamless end-to-end process from requisition to payment.
Andy Downman of Adflex emphasises the technology's potential to spur digital B2B payment scalability and acceptance across markets, underlining the advantage of competitive merchant service rates for suppliers: “Adflex STP levels the playing field of digital B2B payments by delivering the benefits of prompt, secure and pain-free transactions to both buyer and supplier.”
As the adoption of this integrated solution progresses, procurement executives can anticipate greater efficiency in financial operations and strategic advantages.
