Amazon's Procurement Revolution: A Green Logistics Leap

Amazon has made a groundbreaking move in sustainable procurement with its largest-ever order of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), setting a new benchmark for the logistics industry.
The strategic investment aims to significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions and transform the company's supply chain operations.
Record-breaking electric fleet expansion
Over the next 18 months, Amazon will integrate more than 140 electric vehicles into its delivery network, including around 120 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks and eight Volvo FM Battery Electric trucks.
The unprecedented order aims to substantially impact Amazon's carbon footprint, with the new fleet capable of transporting more than 300 million packages annually with zero exhaust emissions.
What's more, Amazon is making significant investments in charging infrastructure to support the mass procurement of electric vehicles.
The company plans to install 360kW electric charging points at key UK sites, capable of charging 40-tonne trucks from 20% to 80% in just over an hour. Investing in rapid charging technology is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency while reducing emissions.
Diversifying transportation
Rail deliveries
Amazon has expanded its procurement strategy to include large-scale rail deliveries, utilising the UK's electric West Coast Main Line.
The initiative aims to transport over 20 million products via the UK's electric rail network in 2025 alone. By leveraging rail transport, Amazon is reducing road congestion and significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with long-haul trucking.
Last-mile innovation
Amazon has introduced on-foot deliveries in central London and expanded its fleet of electric cargo bikes in major UK cities. Since 2022,
Amazon has made more than 150 million deliveries using electric vans and cargo bikes in the UK, demonstrating a significant shift towards zero-emission last-mile delivery options.
Government support and industry impact
The UK Government supports Amazon's procurement efforts through the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator Programme (ZEHID).
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood comments: "Business has a crucial role to play in decarbonising our roads and that's why it's fantastic to see Amazon place the UK's biggest ever order of electric trucks, supported in part by the Government's U$252m 'Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator' project."
A holistic approach to sustainable procurement
Amazon's multifaceted approach to reducing Scope 3 emissions showcases a comprehensive strategy to transform its procurement and delivery network.
Nicola Fyfe, EU VP of Amazon Logistics, highlighted the company's commitment: "Decarbonising our transport network is key in helping us achieve our goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040. The announcement is an exciting and major step forward for us in this mission."
By leveraging various zero-emission transportation methods, Amazon is not only working towards its own sustainability goals but contributing to the broader decarbonisation of the UK's transport sector.
The procurement strategy demonstrates that large-scale sustainability initiatives can be both environmentally beneficial and operationally efficient, setting a powerful example for other businesses in the industry.
