From CEO to Chief AI Officer: Ivalua’s David Khuat-Duy

Implementing AI at scale poses a complex challenge. Within the procurement sector, this challenge is magnified by the need to integrate advanced technology into existing systems to improve efficiencies and drive innovation.
David Khuat-Duy, the Founder and former CEO of Ivalua, shifted his focus from leading the company to accelerating its AI capabilities. His transition to the role of Chief AI Officer (CAIO) signals a strategic pivot for Ivalua, a company renowned for its robust procurement software solutions.
Understanding AI’s role in procurement
Ivalua's AI-powered spend management solutions cater to global enterprises such as IKEA, Volkswagen and Bulgari, enhancing their capability to manage spend and suppliers effectively.
This innovation boosts profitability, promotes sustainability, reduces supply chain risks and increases employee productivity.
Under David's leadership, Ivalua has embraced AI technologies for several years.
The incorporation of AI began with functionalities like invoice and contract data capture. With the recent introduction of ChatGPT's technology, Ivalua is embedding AI further into its platform, a move perceived as both strategic and transformative for the procurement industry.
The importance of AI-focused leadership
David Khuat-Duy's role in transforming Ivalua's AI strategy cannot be understated.
As he describes: “AI is such a disruptor for the company. A Chief AI Officer has to be someone who has a global understanding of the company, all its processes, to make change happen. It’s not an easy role.”
His technical background and comprehensive knowledge of Ivalua's operations position him uniquely to spearhead this transformative initiative.
David highlights how the integration of AI at Ivalua involves not only enhancing customer solutions but also optimising internal operations.
“In terms of technology, we are LLM-agnostic. This means that we can propose any model of Gen AI to our customer... With this in mind, we decided to implement this at platform level and we are deploying that to all our customers.”
Addressing AI challenges in procurement
Like any transformative technology, AI presents challenges, particularly around algorithmic bias in supplier evaluations. Ivalua is proactive in constructing an 'evaluation layer' to ensure feedback loops in AI processes.
David notes: "Algorithmic bias is one of the main challenges that have to be addressed... The idea is not to have the human out of the loop. It’s very important that in this evaluation process you insert a human element that gives feedback at the right moment, providing real trust."
As procurement operations increasingly rely on AI, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards across diverse landscapes becomes essential. Ivalua's commitment to ethical AI practices enforces trust and reliability in its solutions.
Pioneering AI-driven procurement solutions
Ivalua prioritises specific AI use cases to improve procurement decision-making and supplier collaboration. Examples include contract summarisation and category research assistants, which provide in-depth insights to enhance procurement strategies across industries.
David's experience and strategic direction aims to foster a thorough understanding of AI's impact on procurement operations.
Through this lens, Ivalua continues to deploy AI across all departments, ensuring that as adoption grows, the technology seamlessly integrates into both its internal processes and customer-facing solutions.
The transformation David leads at Ivalua exemplifies the growing significance of AI in procurement, indicating that thoughtful integration and leadership are key to leveraging AI's full potential.
His journey reflects the broader industry trend towards embedding AI deeply into procurement strategies to meet the evolving demands of global enterprises.
