Leaders from Bosch, Citi and Salesforce spoke at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE New York on Supply Chain Sustainability, sponsored by Coupa

Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE New York was packed full of insightful discussions from industry-leading companies.

Across the two days, viewers were treated to an array of fireside chats with expert leaders, as well as keynotes and panel discussions, where an array of the most important topics were the centre of these conversations.

One of the most insightful discussions of the two-day event was on Supply Chain Sustainability, sponsored by Coupa, which saw leaders share exclusive insights and expert advice on making the supply chain more sustainable.

Participants in the forum were:

  • Madison Gunter, VP of Procurement Programs, Supplier, Governance, & Compliance at Salesforce
  • Javette Hines, Director, Head of Supply Chain Development, Inclusion and Sustainability at Citi
  • Chandan Trehan, Lead - Digital Supply Chains at Bosch

Supplier selection and sustainability integration

Over the 40 minutes, our trio of leaders were asked a range of questions, including how they go about integrating sustainability criteria into supplier selection to ensure ethical and environmentally responsible practices.

Chandan emphasised collaboration and early integration of sustainability criteria in supply chain processes.

He said: “No one person, one organisation, one region, can solve this problem alone. It has to be a collaborative effort that comes in and brings in multiple people together. Sustainability has to be baked into the processes and in the organisation's mindset and it has to be baked in as early as possible in the process.”

Challenges in global supply chains

All three of our speakers outlined the complexities in a modern global supply chain, including regulatory requirements, the need to work within partnerships for systematic and strategic coverage across different regions and creating a global standard that accommodates regional variations in understanding sustainability.

Javette Hines outlined the need for collaboration and sharing best practices with other organisations. “It's a matter of partnering with other companies who might be either our customers or suppliers, but partnering to share information,” she added.

“As we look at some of those goals, is there alignment and where can we think to be more integrated in our process.

"Also just more intentional to understand globally where pockets of change are happening and where we need to think about them. As we identify not just risk within our supply chain and within our firms, but also opportunities to enhance what it is we're doing and then at the same time, continue to drive value.”

Role of technology

The use of technology was also discussed as part of the panel, with all of our leaders highlighting the role of AI and innovative technologies, such as using DNA for identifying sustainable materials, which can enhance the circular economy and sustainable manufacturing processes.

Madison discussed how technology should be used with knowledge.

He added: “I don't believe in blind technology, when someone is not monitoring or looking at it. An optimist is great, but from looking at it, from what it can do and what downsides it may have and continuously looking at it to support operations within.

“A lot of times folks will say, oh yeah, technology, technology and run with that. But that doesn’t always mean that it's the best scenario.
