How are Mondra and Microsoft Reducing Scope 3 Emissions?
Mondra, part of the BRC Mondra Coalition, is working with more than 85% of the UK grocery sector to help them measure and improve the environmental performance of their products and reduce Scope 3 emissions through scaled product footprinting.
Retailers include Tesco, M&S, Co-op, Ocado Retail, ASDA, Lidl and Sainsbury’s, whilst major brands include Starbucks and Nando’s. Its suppliers span the likes of Avara, Samworth Brothers, Greencore, Pilgrims UK, Dunbia, Cranswick and Bakkavor.
Its app will now feature on Microsoft Azure Marketplace, an online store providing applications and services for use on Azure. Mondra customers can now take advantage of the trusted Azure cloud platform, with streamlined deployment and management.
What is Mondra?
Mondra, which is also an Oracle partner, provides innovative climate tech, working to help the UK grocery sector to reach decarbonisation targets.
Mondra’s quest is to enable an economically prosperous and just transition to Net Zero through AI-powered technology that automates Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for a retailer’s products at pace.
LCA is a method used to understand the environmental impacts of a product throughout its entire life cycle, including carbon, water and biodiversity impacts.
Currently under development is Mondra Sherpa, a ‘carbon copilot’ for clients' journeys towards net zero.
It will bring together best-in-class tech and AI models, combined with Mondra’s security system to make sure it follows the most important principle within Mondra: data privacy.
Tackling Scope 3
Jason Barrett, Mondra CEO, says: “We are delighted to be making Mondra readily available to a wider audience through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
"Our aim at Mondra is to streamline Scope 3 measurement and reporting for our clients, enabling them to make business decisions that move them towards Net Zero, and this is a further step on that journey."
The Azure Marketplace is an online market for buying and selling cloud solutions certified to run on Azure. The Azure Marketplace helps connect companies seeking innovative, cloud-based solutions with partners who have developed solutions that are ready to use.
“Through Microsoft Azure Marketplace, customers around the world can easily find, buy and deploy partner solutions they can trust, all certified and optimised to run on Azure,” said Jake Zborowski, General Manager, Microsoft Azure Platform at Microsoft Corp.
“We’re happy to welcome Mondra solution to the growing Azure Marketplace ecosystem.”
Collaborate and encourage net zero policies
The company was founded in 2020 and works as a software platform to record, monitor and share environmental data throughout the food supply chain.
By using AI, Mondra creates digital twins of food supply chains and gives users the items to collaborate and encourage net zero policies. Users can also access a lifetime cycle assessment on specific products, allowing for engaging with suppliers to bring down their carbon impact.
Reported in UKTN (UK Tech News) in February 2024, the London-based food supply chain decarbonisation platform, raised £3.6m (approx US$4.7m) in pre-Series A funding.
The investment round included backing from 7 Generation Ventures, AlbionVC, GC Foodtech Ventures, Foodsparks by Peakbridge, Ponderosa Ventures and Vala Capital.
