A free carbon calculator empowers SMEs to measure Scope 3 emissions
SMEs can now access a complimentary carbon calculation tool that enables precise measurement of Scope 3 emissions throughout their value chain

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are finding new ways to track emissions and streamline their supply chain strategies with the introduction of the SME Climate Hub's Small Business Carbon Calculator.

This free tool, developed in collaboration with Emitwise and Equipoise, supports businesses with up to 50 employees in tracking their Scope 1, 2, and most importantly, Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

Scope 3 emissions, which encompass indirect emissions from a company’s entire supply chain, pose significant challenges for procurement leaders who are seeking to identify hotspots and potential reductions.

As procurement teams increasingly require comprehensive data to inform purchasing decisions, the involvement of platforms like Emitwise marks a critical step forward.

"Providing SMEs with accessible tools to measure and reduce their emissions is critical to driving real supply chain decarbonisation," states Ian Hind, Head of Partnerships at Emitwise.

Carbon Tracking's Impact on Procurement

Procurement executives are eager to harness the power of precise carbon data in shaping their strategies. The Small Business Carbon Calculator offers a straightforward interface, eliminating jargon and facilitating ease of use.

By enabling businesses to pinpoint their emissions hotspots, procurement departments can negotiate more effectively with suppliers and push for reduced environmental impact.

Highlighting the importance of accessible tools is central to the Hub’s mission, as Pamela Jouven from the SME Climate Hub notes: "Accurate emissions data is the foundation for effective climate action, and empowering small businesses to measure and reduce their emissions is crucial to helping them play their part in tackling climate change."

Supporting Informed Procurement Decisions

With procurement officers increasingly prioritising sustainability, tools like the Small Business Carbon Calculator play an essential role by integrating emissions data directly into decision-making processes.

By providing a comprehensive overview of emissions across different scopes, the tool ensures that procurement strategies can be directly linked to carbon reduction targets.

Luke Abbott, Co-Founder and CEO of Equipoise, explains their approach: "By powering the SME Climate Hub’s Small Business Carbon Calculator, we’re providing SMEs who are embarking on their journey a comprehensive and easy to use tool to measure emissions, identify hotspots, meet customer and regulatory reporting requirements and focus on implementing emission reduction initiatives."

Aligning Tools with Procurement Needs

The SME Climate Hub’s toolset, including the recent addition of the Scope 3 Specific Calculator, further enables procurement teams to address their complex operational requirements.

These tools are already proving beneficial for SMEs looking to align their activities with broader carbon reduction commitments and customer expectations.

According to the SME Climate Hub, helping SMEs integrate accurate emissions measurements into their operations is a valuable step toward global emissions reductions.

The suite of free tools provided by the Hub empowers procurement officers not only to comply with evolving regulations but also to drive innovation in sustainability efforts.
