Madeleine Joubert, Chief Procurement Officer, Head of Procurement at BDO provides insights into the role of procurement and supply chain when it comes to sustainability and ESG.
During her fireside discussion at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE, Joubert begins by emphasising the complexity of BDO’s sustainability strategy and the challenge of aligning procurement with the 17 SDGs.
Understanding the scope of sustainability
Further into the fireside, Joubert highlights the importance of understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions as well as collaborating with the scientific community for accurate data. She also discusses the need for a balanced approach, considering economic, equity, and environmental values.
“ "If we only look at the environment on its own, you are only going to think about, well, I'm going to change my capital equipment now and I'm going from diesel to electric,” explains Joubert.

Sharing insights into BDO’s journey to develop sustainable practices, Joubert advocates for continuous improvement and transformative actions, stressing the importance of collaboration and systemic awareness in achieving sustainability goals.
"We've had a fantastic journey at BDO where they've really challenged our thinking but also helped us develop a roadmap,” says Joubert.

Joubert concludes her fireside by sharing her optimism regarding the economic value of sustainability and the role of data, AI and whole-brain thinking in order to drive meaningful change, and touches on the responsibility procurement professionals have to lead the sustainability movement.
