DS Smith’s DryPack helps procurement teams cut costs and emissions with a recyclable seafood box, enhancing supply chain efficiency and sustainability

Organisations can effectively mitigate environmental impact, ensure the responsible sourcing of materials and reduce waste by integrating sustainability into procurement strategies.

Not only will this help enhance supply chain resilience and minimise risks linked to resource scarcity but it will also help maintain compliance and protect brand reputation as regulatory pressures and stakeholder expectations evolve.

Leading packaging company DS Smith has released a new, innovative product that will help enhance sustainable and cost-efficient procurement for seafood - DryPack.

This water-resistant and recyclable product helps seafood processors reduce CO2 emissions and costs while keeping fresh fish below 40°F for more than 40 hours when packed with ice.

Cheryl Holliday, Director, Marketing for DS Smith, North America, explains: “DS Smith is changing how the seafood industry delivers seafood, salmon and other fish from catch to customers with DryPack, a proven, 100% recyclable, fibre-based box that meets uncompromising standards and stands up to the rigor of processing and transportation.”

About DryPack

DryPack is a fish box that helps seafood processors reduce CO2 emissions and costs.

The product minimises fuel emissions and incoming freight costs by being shipped to processors flat in boxes that can be easily assembled via automation equipment or manually.

DryPack is also the only container board seafood box that is approved for air freight by the International Air Transport Association.

Benefits of DryPack
  • Cost savings by being shipped flat
  • Sustainability
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Cold chain performance
  • Air freight approved

Steven Rose, Managing Director, Packaging, for DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper (NAPP), states: “DS Smith is excited to provide the North American seafood industry with a proven, 100% recyclable, fibre-based box that meets uncompromising standards for transporting fresh fish. By shipping empty DryPack seafood boxes flat at a lower cost – and offering customers an alternative to EPS boxes – we can support seafood processors in their efforts to increase efficiency and reduce supply chain costs.”

The importance of sustainability

DryPack will help DS Smith make further progress on its sustainability strategy, Now & Next.

This strategy focuses on the sustainability challenges our society faces today and potential challenges future generations could face to enhance change across four core areas:

  • Circularity
  • Carbon
  • People & communities
  • Nature

DS Smith has already replaced more than 1 billion plastics and creates 100% recyclable or reusable packaging as part of its sustainability efforts.

Its design analysis tool that helps customers improve sustainability performance - Circular Design Metrics - has created more than 30,000 circular-ready projects.

Sustainability remains at the heart of DryPack as the product is crafted to minimise plastic waste in seafood packaging.

It replaces traditional wax-coated boxes that cannot be recycled easily with 100% recyclable fibre-based materials (which also helps improve circularity in the company).

Its Greencoat® technology also maintains moisture resistance and durability without damaging recyclability. This technology has CFIA, USDA, FBA and FDA certifications.

DryPack continues to support procurement teams in achieving their ESG goals by maintaining compliance with sustainability targets.
