How Supply Chain Innovation Helped DP World Cut Emissions

DP World, a titan in the logistics arena, has showcased a notable 15% reduction in emissions since 2022, as highlighted in its 2024 ESG Report.
This accomplishment is deeply rooted in the company's transformative approach to managing its global supply chain, wherein sustainability is not a side project but an integral component of operations, encompassing port management, logistics and marine services.
The effects of this sustainable shift extend beyond DP World itself, permeating the supply chains of countless clients worldwide.
âThe journey to a sustainable future is critical,â says Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive of DP World.
âAs a leader in global trade, we recognise that achieving meaningful change requires sustained innovation, strong partnerships and a clear commitment to our targets.â
Embedding green practices in logistics
With an expansive logistics network stretching over six continents, DP World connects with over 50,000 employees across its ports, terminals and inland services.
The emissions decrease is linked to strategic interventions, including the deployment of more electric vehicles, the substitution of biofuels for diesel and a conscious move from road to rail and barge transport. These actions link directly to emissions reductions in the supply chain's goods transportation phase.
Rail transport emphasises this strategy, providing a less carbon-intensive alternative to traditional road options.
Simultaneously, artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in refining logistics processes, helping minimise waste. By optimising shipping routes and enhancing energy management within warehouses, DP World maximises efficiency.
Now, 65% of its electricity comes from renewable sources, marking a significant step forward in clean energy usage despite the complex infrastructure requirements across its global operations.
Such advancements propel progress in reducing Scope 3 emissionsâthose that lie outside an entity's direct operations and typically within supply chains.
With DP World serving numerous manufacturers and retailers globally, its efforts extend well beyond its own impact, instead driving other businesses to lower their environmental footprints.
Aligning finance with environmental targets
Beyond operational changes, DP World also reorients its financial strategies to achieve environmental objectives.
The issuance of a US$100 million Blue Bond in 2024âmarking the first for a logistics firm in its regionâsupports ocean conservation and the blue economy, promoting sustainable resource utilisation for economic growth.
Furthermore, the release of its first Green Sukuk Impact and Allocation Report details the investment of US$1.17bn in green assets, with a focus on low-carbon logistics and sustainable infrastructure.
This financial direction is validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), solidifying DP World as the first logistics enterprise in its region to reach this milestone.
Building resilience through responsibility
Sustainability efforts at DP World extend to supply chain ethics, health and safety and community investment under the company's "Our World, Our Future" strategy.
Central to its social programmes are education, water access and women's empowerment. Collaborations with organisations like WaterAid and Bridges to Prosperity facilitate clean water access and infrastructure development in underserved areas.
The DP World Foundation, established in 2022, funds initiatives related to health, education and food security.
These endeavours are deeply interlinked with logistics. Enhancing local economic resilience contributes to the stability of global supply chains. Furthermore, with climate change posing threats to infrastructure such as ports and roads, DP World is committed to safeguarding both trade and the communities reliant on it.
