How Coupa is Combining Sustainability and Growth
Known for its ability to multiply margins with its management platform that empowers companies to take control of their total spend, Coupa is also focused on making the planet a better place for future generations through its ESG commitments.
Driven by a values-based culture, the organisation is dedicated to serving people and communities across the globe. Its ESG report focuses on how the company’s platform, principles, innovation, people and community can create a better planet.
It also highlights several efforts Coupa plans to undertake as part of its focus on becoming a generational company.
Platform innovation that drives growth and sustainability
Coupa’s AI-driven total spend platform has helped businesses unlock US$194bn in bottom-line savings, boosting their business growth.
With a growing community of 10 million suppliers and US$6tn in economic spend, its community-generated AI helps make margins multiply.
This same platform incorporates ESG data into spend and supply decisions. Through these ESG features, Coupa has seen customers spend millions of dollars with diverse suppliers, curtail carbon emissions through supply chain efficiencies and comply with regulatory requirements.
Coupa helped Wawa, a convenience store chain in the US, create a central database for supplier diversity. Wawa tracks and increases diverse spend across all of its operations.
Commitment to a more sustainable planet
Coupa is reducing its environmental impact by pursuing climate targets that have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is committed to mitigating climate impact and achieving net zero by 2040 (FY 2041) by:
- Sourcing 100% renewable electricity annually
- Implementing energy efficiency projects across global facilities to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- Collaborating with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions
People, Community and Societal Impact
Coupa is supporting employees by fostering an environment of inclusion, equity and growth through opportunities for mentorship, learning, connection, volunteerism and philanthropy – as well as static pro bono service.
It has launched three new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): enCourage supports global veterans, active military members and their allies; Exceed serves Asian Pacific Islander (API) employees, the API community and allies; and ABLE supports the disabilities and abilities community and allies.
Coupa and Salesforce teams have also formed a partnership, dedicating 1,000 hours to supporting non-profits working toward environmental justice.
De-risking operations with principles and ethics
Coupa is applying strong governance practices across its operations to create a safe, secure and ethical work environment. It has launched a cross-functional AI Committee to support colleagues with education on AI ethics and its use.
The committee has created AI guidelines and is actively working to implement the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework to ensure customer data protection.
Leagh Turner, CEO at Coupa, says: “Coupa is focused on becoming a generational company that thrives as a global business and an exceptional place to work.
“Core to that is embracing the responsibility we have to future generations and serving the greater societal good, which our ESG strategy ensures we do.
“I extend my gratitude to every member of the multiple teams that have been part of the work outlined in this report.
“I’m grateful to the Coupa community who are partnering on this journey with us. We’re co-innovating new platform solutions with our customers to improve margins while decreasing climate, supply and social risks, creating positive change across their businesses and communities.”
