Procurement leaders from Aon, UPS and Snyk took part in an engaging panel discussion at Coupa Inspire 2025
Taking to the stage at Coupa Inspire 2025, leaders from Aon, UPS and Snyk discussed how their companies have leveraged Coupa's platform to achieve success

Coupa Inspire 2025 resumed on Wednesday (14 May) with a panel featuring notable leaders in procurement from Aon, UPS and Snyk.

The discussion highlighted how these companies are harnessing the power of Coupa's platform to revolutionise their procurement strategies and achieve improved business outcomes.

Evolving e-invoicing practices

Melissa Salo, Global Chief Procurement Officer at Aon, detailed substantial progress in the company's shift towards electronic invoicing.

She noted that initially, only 15% of invoices were received electronically. Through strategic supplier engagement campaigns powered by Coupa’s community data, Aon has successfully increased this figure to 50% and aims for 85% with continued initiatives.

This transformation underscores the role of robust data platforms in optimizing procurement processes.

Moreover, Melissa emphasised the broader application of AI beyond invoicing. Aon's commitment to fostering what she calls a "30% digital mindset" involves equipping the workforce to lead both technological and traditional roles. The collaboration with a Harvard professor was key to this development, promoting a digital-forward approach that is vital for driving procurement innovations.

Enhancing risk management and cost efficiency

Chris Siwek, Vice President of Procurement at Snyk, recounted how AI through Coupa is reshaping supplier risk management.

He explained: "I take advantage of Coupa AI with Risk Aware and the fact that it's able to flag any suppliers that are potentially high risk."

This showcases the system's utility in providing real-time insights into supplier's risk profiles. This capability marks a transformative phase in compliance and auditing processes.

Jim McGrath, Chief Procurement and Real Estate Officer at UPS, shared insights on navigating financial complexities using AI-enhanced spend visibility.

With specific reference to Chinese retaliatory tariffs, he noted: "We had a situation a couple of weeks ago over one of our suppliers was imposing a 145% tariff. Who knows what that would've looked like when it finally got to the States, but the reality is we were able to flag it, we sourced the event back into the US and we had a US$1.7m cost avoidance."

Such strategic sourcing decisions facilitated by AI underscore the critical role of technology in managing procurement risks and reducing costs.

Optimising tail spend and resource utilisation

The utility of AI in managing tail spend has also been demonstrated by UPS and Snyk.

Jim highlighted the discovery and renegotiation of a long-standing shuttle service contract, resulting in immediate cost savings of US$400,000 through competitive sourcing, emphasising the need for continuous contract evaluations supported by technology.

Chris illustrated the benefits AI brings to resource optimisation at Snyk.

With tools like Coupa Spend Guard automating expense monitoring, he stated: "We didn't actually have to hire the headcount and the people that were manually doing it were able to go and do other stuff."

This example illustrates how AI can reassign human resources to more strategic roles, thus enhancing procurement efficiency.

As the industry embraces digital tools, procurement leaders maintain a confident outlook on the future. Chris predicts "autonomous procurement is coming," while Jim stresses the significance of maintaining "good clean data" and effective governance frameworks to support AI-driven transformations.

Concluding on a collaborative note, Melissa advised leveraging the procurement community to drive advancement: "Use this community that you're surrounded with, form relationships both with partners and other clients, and learn. Together it's going to be really powerful."
