Meet Basware's New Chief Revenue Officer

Basware has a new Chief Revenue Officer in the form of Mark McCarthy.
With 30 years of experience in senior leadership positions and a deep expertise in financial software and digital transformation, Mark is set to lead with an "evolution, not revolution” approach.
Mark was previously an advisor to the company as Operating Partner at Basware investor, Accel-KKR, and was also the company’s Chief of Staff.
"Basware has a rich history of innovation in invoice automation and I've long-been an admirer from the outside," says Mark. "Now, as businesses navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape, Basware's role as a strategic partner has never been more critical.
“I'm excited to take over from the strong foundation set by Steve Canning and lead our go-to-market sales strategy to deliver even greater value to our customers."
Meet Mark McCarthy
Mark McCarthy is an experienced enterprise software leader who has scaled teams, driven growth and supported exits across public and private equity companies throughout his career.
Before joining Basware in 2022, he held several roles at leading companies such as SAP, Coupa and Accel-KKR.
Over the course of three decades, Mark has gained expertise in sales, alliances, M&A integration, marketing and go-to-market transformation, serving in a variety of senior leadership roles.
As Chief Revenue Officer at Basware, Mark will focus on leading the company’s global sales strategy, accelerating revenue growth and securing its position as a leader in invoice lifecycle management.
He is set to help redefine how the company delivers value through automation, engages with enterprise customers and scales go-to-market capabilities across regions.
"This transition has a strong personal meaning for me," Mark added on LinkedIn. "I’m taking over this role from Steve Canning, my friend, mentor and colleague of 15 years.
“Steve has been instrumental in shaping Basware’s success and I have the utmost respect for the leadership he’s shown and the impact he has made. While he is stepping back from a full-time role, I’m grateful that he will remain actively involved on an advisory basis, continuing to support me and the team as we move forward. I know I speak for everyone at Basware when I say thank you, Steve, for everything.
“My journey with Basware began in 2022 when I was with Accel-KKR as we took Basware private from the Helsinki Stock Exchange. As operating partner with AKKR, I supported the company through a major transformation, working closely with CEO Jason Kurtz and the Basware executive team before jumping on board last year to join that team. Now, as CRO, I’m eager to build on our momentum and drive even greater impact.”
Steve Canning’s success at Basware
Steve Canning has been Chief Revenue Officer for Basware since January 2023, during which time he has set an all-time company record in growth acceleration
Last month, Basware was named a Leader in the first Gartner Magic Quadrant for Accounts Payable Applications.
Steve has now transitioned into a sales advisory position at Basware.
"Leading Basware's sales strategies has been a privilege and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved" comments Steve. "Having recently been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, Basware's market position is stronger than ever.
“I am excited to hand over the baton to Mark and retire from a full-time role into my new sales advisory role. The company will continue to drive innovation and deliver outstanding value to customers and I look forward to continuing to support Basware."
Enhancing procurement
It's hoped Mark's appointment as Chief Revenue Officer will enhance Basware's ability to meet the changing needs of procurement functions across the world.
He possesses a deep understanding of how modern procurement teams operate and their needs from technology partners, especially following his time in enterprise software sales at both Coupa and SAP.
Mark will adopt a cross-functional approach, aligning marketing, sales and customer success, to help Basware address strategic pain points, deliver more integrated solutions that span procurement and AP and tailor messaging to meet both procurement and finance needs.
His experience in channel partners and global system integrators will also help expand Basware’s partner-first strategy to maintain tighter integration with ERP systems and procurement suites and stronger co-innovation opportunities with partners such as Deloitte, KPMG and Accenture.
As procurement teams handle greater expectations surrounding compliance, automation and strategic impact, Mark’s appointment stands to serve the needs of enterprise procurement teams effectively.
Basware will improve its procurement offering and support organisations in turning invoice lifecycle management into an operational advantage by combining Mark’s partner collaboration, enterprise sales expertise and customer-centric focus.
