AI-led innovations take centre stage

Artificial intelligence stands at the heart of SAP’s 2025 vision.

During the SAP Spend Connect Live event in October 2024, the company unveiled major updates to its spend management tools, notably the integration of its generative AI copilot Joule, into the SAP Ariba source-to-pay solution portfolio.

Joule’s role is to boost productivity by automating routine tasks, such as handling inquiries and summarising data. This technology will extend to SAP Fieldglass and SAP Business Network by year’s end, streamlining up to 80% of frequent processes.

Additionally, the new SAP Ariba Intake Management solution, set for launch in early 2025, aims to simplify procurement by centralising request handling. This reduces complexity and enhances compliance.

Manoj Swaminathan, SAP’s President and Chief Product Officer for Intelligent Spend and Business Network, highlights the value of process orchestration: “The technology landscape is rapidly evolving and organisations are grappling with a heterogeneous mix of solutions.

"Many companies now employ multiple systems to meet their end-to-end business needs, leading to siloed processes and confused employees.

"Procurement, in particular, often suffers from fragmented systems handling everything from purchase requests to supplier onboarding, creating inefficiencies and frustration.

"To address this challenge, we’re seeing a shift toward process orchestration – a centralised approach that connects disparate systems, streamlining procurement inquiries and status updates," Manoj continues.

"Our newest solution, SAP Ariba Intake Management, can tackle this head-on by automating request creation and providing a single point of entry so that organizations can empower employees to adhere to policies and regulations without the burden of manual corrections.

"This approach can not only save valuable time and resources but also drive user adoption and increase compliance and efficiency, positioning companies to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.”

These advancements reflect AI’s broader impact across SAP’s business networks, fostering collaboration, operational efficiency and deeper spending insights.

In the words of Etosha Thurman, SAP’s Chief Marketing Officer: “AI and cloud-based solutions will position procurement at the heart of data-driven decision-making, enabling real-time insights and freeing teams to focus on high-impact initiatives.

"The future belongs to procurement professionals who blend strategic thinking with relationship management and a combination of functional and technological expertise."

Fresh leadership for a new era

The procurement landscape is poised for a wave of new leadership in 2025.

SAP anticipates a generational shift as younger professionals step into CPO roles.

This change, fuelled by evolving AI strategies, demographic trends and increasing demands on procurement teams, will reshape the industry.

Jeff Collier, SAP’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasises the importance of nurturing talent, noting: “Organisations must prioritise upskilling their workforce and attracting young professionals.

"Junior leaders who demonstrated resilience during the COVID-19 years are now positioned to drive sustainability, AI integration and risk management.”

This fresh perspective could transform procurement into a more dynamic, innovative function. Companies that invest in developing their teams will likely reap the benefits of agile leadership, ensuring they remain competitive amid rapid industry shifts.

Transforming travel and expense management

SAP also highlights the evolving nature of travel and expense management as a critical area of focus.

As companies adapt to hybrid work and new travel norms, efficient systems become essential. The upcoming analytics add-on for SAP Fieldglass solutions provides tools for agile talent strategies, helping organisations navigate these changes while enhancing operational efficiency.

Moreover, SAP Business Network’s new “promote” subscription for suppliers offers increased visibility, enabling them to attract more customers. This aligns with a broader trend towards interconnected ecosystems, where businesses collaborate more effectively to achieve shared goals.

SAP’s roadmap for 2025 paints a picture of a rapidly evolving field, where AI and innovation are not just tools but transformative forces. With fresh leadership, centralised solutions and AI-driven processes, the stage is set for a procurement revolution.
