PSC LIVE: Sustainability - Insights From Kimberly-Clark
Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE: Sustainability will arrive at the QEII Centre on 5 and 6 March for an exclusive two-day event that will explore the dynamic intersection of supply chain management and sustainability.
Across the two days, attendees can look forward to engaging with a scope of panel discussions and keynote presentations from several of our industry’s leading organisations, such as NatWest, Vodafone, Santander and NHS Supply Chain.
Our event will also be co-located with Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero, allowing those who attend to access a holistic platform that fosters cross-sector collaboration, aligning carbon reduction strategies with circular economy initiatives, responsible sourcing and Scope 3 emissions management.

James Hallam, Global Climate Leader at Kimberly-Clark
James Hallam is the Global Climate Leader at Kimberly-Clark.
He joined the organisation in 2007 and has since worked across several functions and locations.
James is a qualified Mechanical Engineer who has acquired experience across research & development, operations, category & portfolio management, marketing activation & strategy and product & business model innovation.
He found a passion for sustainability four years ago after moving into a new role and was responsible for launching The RightCycle™ Program across Europe.
This program includes the world’s first dispenser recycling service and a closed-loop recycling service for paper hand towels.
James is now responsible for the development and execution of the logistics sustainability strategy globally, with a 2030 target of reducing Scope 3 emissions by 20% (versus its 2015 baseline).
This strategy included shifting to more sustainable transport solutions, such as intermodal and electrification, accurate measurement and optimisation of its logistics network.
At PSC LIVE: Sustainability, James will utilise his experience to deliver an engaging keynote presentation, titled 'The journey towards HGV electrification in Europe, a shippers perspective'.
We recently caught up with James to discover his inspiration for getting involved with our event, what he hopes to achieve through his keynote presentation and his predictions for the future of procurement and supply chain.

What inspired you to get involved in Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE: Sustainability?
It was a chance introduction by a colleague to be honest.
I have been looking for external opportunities to share the work we have done getting our first Battery Electric Truck (BEV) pilot started.
This will be the first face-to-face event, the others have been webinars thus far. There are three objectives:
- Help other companies follow the same approach we have at Kimberly-Clark to accelerate the industry transition to electric trucks.
- Share KCs forward-looking plans in this area to help connect with suppliers that can help us with our wider rollout
- Position KC as a leader in the space of sustainability and emissions reduction
Provide an overview of what your keynote, 'The journey towards HGV electrification in Europe, a shippers perspective' will focus on.
Kimberly-Clark has a 2030 ambition to reduce Scope 3 Category 4 emissions by 65% vs. 2015 baseline.
Part of the plan to achieve this involves electrifying all HGV routes in Europe under 400km.
This case study shows the steps we took to set up our first electric HGV pilot in Czech Republic. By collaborating with suppliers and engaging with a multifunctional team we have proved that cost parity in this space is achievable now. This one truck will deliver a CO2e reduction of 140 tonnes but the objective is far wider.
Using this as a proof of concept we want to follow fast with similar projects to build towards our 2030 goal.

What do you hope to achieve through PSC LIVE: Sustainability?
Hopefully I can meet some like-minded people and learn about what my peers are doing in this space and what we can emulate.
I would also like to meet any well-placed suppliers that can help me achieve my goals.
What emerging trends do you believe will shape the future of the procurement and supply chain industries over the next decade?
In all likelihood, it will be something that no one has seen coming.
I did read a very interesting book recently by Daniel Suarez called ‘Delta-V’ and the sequel ‘Critical Mass’. It was about asteroid mining and eventually developed into how a new economy was built that helped not only expand humanity presence in space but also helped to decarbonise Earth.
I think to meet the stretching climate goals we have to achieve will require not only new technology but changes in the economy and the ‘world-order’ we know today.
