Identifying as procurement 

Taking to Stage 1 at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE, Paul Doherty, Procurement Director at Heathrow discussed the challenges faced by the procurement team and the complexities of the evolving nature of the procurement function. 

During his keynote, he emphasised the need for a shift in the way that industries approach procurement, moving beyond  traditional focuses on cost and efficiency to incorporate broader value-based considerations

The Challenges

Deep-diving into the changing landscape in procurement from traditional models focused on cost, time and quality, Doherty explains that these aspects have become more complex with factors such as sustainability, safety and cybersecurity playing into the shift. 

Doherty also emphasises the need for collaboration and the significance of working with partners who share the same values and priorities. 

"We want to make sure that we're spending the right amount of time with the people who drive the real value in our work,” said Doherty.

Success at Heathrow

Doherty concludes his keynote by discussing the outcomes and successes resulting from the company’s new approach, recognising the broader value generated beyond cost savings.

"So we've had to really start thinking it through. And in particular in recent times at Heathrow, we've been really looking at and challenging ourselves as to whether or not that traditional model really drives the decisions that we need any more,” said Doherty.
