From the latest in AI advancements to fascinating panels, Day 1 of Zip Forward was packed full of insight and innovation shaping the procurement landscape

Zip Forward, the premier conference for AI procurement platform Zip, returned to San Francisco's YBCA for its third annual gathering, attracting more than 700 procurement leaders to the downtown venue.

The theme of this year’s event was "Agents of Change," as the event united procurement and finance executives who are transforming how organisations manage spending, operations and growth through artificial intelligence, orchestration and decisive action.

The conference opened with a keynote address that echoed the event's theme, featuring Zip's leadership team. They demonstrated to attendees how Zip's platform can empower procurement functions to become true agents of transformation within their organisations.

Rujul Zaparde, Co-Founder and CEO of Zip, emphasised how AI has evolved from an experimental technology to a fundamental component of procurement operations.

Rujul believes that procurement's inherent characteristics – structured processes and repetitive workflows that typically divert teams from higher-value initiatives – make it an ideal domain for AI agent deployment.

"Procurement is the perfect place to apply AI agents," he said. "It's full of structured, repetitive tasks that keep us from doing the strategic work we actually want to do."

Ann Fleishell, VP of Procurement at OpenAI, at Zip Forward 2025

Procurement reimagined: From bureaucracy to rocket ship

Elsewhere, attendees heard from Ann Fleishell, Vice President of Procurement at OpenAI.

Procurement at OpenAI has evolved beyond simply supporting organisational expansion – it's become a catalyst for it. Within a single year, Ann has established a function that now serves two-thirds of the company's workforce, demonstrating the transformative potential of integrating AI agents directly into operational processes.

During her keynote, Ann spoke about OpenAI, where procurement aligns with a mission of global significance: ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity.

She added: "For procurement here, our mission is making working with the world easier, faster and safer… technology can see us, help us, meet us where we are. That opportunity exists for us in procurement."

To illustrate this, Ann introduced AI-powered tools like Penny, an approachable virtual procurement teammate, and Risk Buddy, a GPT-driven risk monitor. These agents amplify human capabilities, accelerate decision-making and transform workflows without replacing the people behind them:

"AI doesn't replace the human in procurement," Ann added. "Instead, it reveals our superpowers… faster decisions, better data, stronger partnerships."

Transforming procurement: Lessons from T-Mobile's journey

Reimagining procurement at the world's largest wireless carrier requires visionary leadership, swift execution and exceptional talent.

T-Mobile CPO Michael Simpson shared insights into spearheading a technological transformation that's reshaping the company's financial and procurement functions.

Michael delved into the company's ambitious transformation journey, highlighting both the scale of operations and the challenges of modernising a complex procurement function.

The transformation at T-Mobile was driven by a vision to simplify processes for the business, focusing on high-impact deals while streamlining repeatable transactions.

Michael emphasised designing procurement experiences that are delightful and seamless for employees, moving away from heavy, policy-driven processes towards a more strategic, value-add approach: "We want to move further to the left in the right conversations… so we are in the right conversations with our business partners."

People, influence and purpose in the AI era

AI is doing more than streamlining workflows – it's fundamentally restructuring procurement organisations.

Ignacio Cabrera, Vice President of Procurement (CPO) at Cloudflare, Katie Streu, Head of Procurement at Anthropic, and Mithun Sharma, Chief Procurement Officer at Block joined Zip's CTO, Lu Cheng, to examine how emerging technology is redefining procurement's reputation, stakeholder engagement and strategic value.

The discussion explored the human dimensions of AI implementation: developing adaptable teams, upskilling existing talent and rethinking organisational frameworks in an era of intelligent automation.

The panel explored the transformative impact of AI on procurement, talent and team structures across high-growth technology companies. Participants emphasised that AI is shifting procurement from tactical, transactional tasks towards strategic business partnership, enabling teams to focus on value creation, speed and enablement rather than purely cost savings.
