Is Blockchain Heading Towards the Mainstream?

Procurement leaders don't need a computer science degree to grasp why blockchain matters.
At its core, it is a shared, tamper-evident ledger synchronised across many computers. For buying organisations, that means purchase orders, change orders, goods receipts, invoices, certificates of origin, compliance attestations and ESG data can be recorded in a way that cannot be retroactively altered without broad consensus.
The practical upside: multi-tier transparency, fewer disputes, faster reconciliations and lower dependence on intermediaries in high-friction cross-border trade.
From provenance to payment
The attraction for procurement is straightforward. A shared ledger can link product identity, lot/batch traceability, chain-of-custody and supplier compliance evidence directly to commercial transactions.
That enables real-time visibility of provenance and movement, simplifies three-way match and reduces fraud and chargebacks. Smart contracts can automate milestone-based payments, release of performance bonds, dynamic discounting or penalties tied to delivery SLAs.
When supply networks span dozens of countries, blockchain-backed attestations for human rights, conflict minerals and carbon reporting can travel with the goods, not in someone's email.
Yet mainstream adoption has lagged because the plumbing has been hard.
Wesley Crook, CEO of FP Block, puts the hurdles into procurement-relevant language: complexity, scalability and interoperability. "Developers often spend months rewriting code for different blockchains, systems buckle under real-world demand and projects are locked into a single chain that may not meet their needs over time," he explains.
Fragmented ecosystems complicate integration with ERP, PLM, WMS, TMS, e-invoicing and supplier risk tools – exactly where procurement needs reliability.
Worse, the bridges meant to connect chains have been attack targets; since 2021, more than US$2.8bn has been lost to bridge exploits.
"This highlights the fragility of current interoperability solutions. Instead of unlocking growth, poor design has exposed projects to massive security risks," he says.
When banks build on blockchain
Payments illustrate why the stakes are high. Swift, the network used by 11,500+ banks, plans its own shared ledger with Bank of America, Citigroup and NatWest to support tokenised instruments, including stablecoins.
Swift says the platform will "record, sequence and validate transactions and enforce rules through smart contracts", whilst making "instant, always-on cross-border transactions possible at unprecedented scale".
For procurement, that could shrink supplier lead times tied to letters of credit, reduce FX friction and enable conditional, event-driven settlement linked to supply chain data. It's also a response to stablecoins, which McKinsey calls "a direct challenge to traditional global payments rails" because legacy systems take days and multiple intermediaries to complete.
Building for scale: The foundation that matters
What does it take for blockchain to move from pilots to procurement's day-to-day? According to Wesley, discipline at the foundation. "Too many projects fail because they were built on shaky foundations", he explains.
"We apply mature DevOps and DevSecOps practices, rigorous code audits, and compliance-minded architecture to ensure projects are reliable, scalable and future-proof."
For procurement, that translates into robust vendor due diligence, demanding enterprise integration roadmaps and insisting on standards alignment (think GS1 and EPCIS 2.0 for event data) so that product and compliance information can be shared across networks and tools.
Interoperability is especially critical as buying organisations participate in multiple supplier networks and regulatory regimes.
FP Block's KOLME framework tackles this by letting each application run on its own high-performance chain whilst staying connected to ecosystems like Ethereum, Solana and Cosmos.
The result is a path to scale without locking procurement into a single vendor or network and without sacrificing the ability to exchange data with customers, auditors and regulators.
The direction of travel is clear. "Just as the internet became the backbone of communication and commerce, blockchain is on track to become the backbone of trust and value exchange", Wesley argues.
For procurement, that backbone could underpin authenticated supplier identities, verifiable certifications, automated compliance and faster cash conversion across borders.
"We believe interoperability will be the key to unlocking its mainstream role," Wesley says. "Once enterprises and developers can build applications that work seamlessly across ecosystems, blockchain will shift from experiments and pilots to critical infrastructure in the global economy."
