Inside Amazon's Emission Report and Procurement Initiatives

Amazon's delivery network, estimated to handle over 1,000 packages per minute, underpins a vast supply chain operation that has significant bearing on global sustainability efforts.
Comprising a workforce exceeding 1.5 million and spanning a vast array of subsidiaries, Amazon's scale positions it uniquely to influence the sustainability goals within procurement and supply chain decisions.
Despite its absolute emissions witnessing an upswing in 2024, Amazon's concerted efforts to mitigate its environmental footprint are evident through various ESG initiatives.
"Looking ahead, we recognise that the path to being a more sustainable company will never be linear, because we’re charting new territory at an unprecedented scale," says Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasising the complexity and aspiration of Amazon's endeavours.
She adds: "While we are firm on our goals, our approach will continuously evolve with emerging challenges and opportunities, as we’re seeing with the rapid adoption of AI. No matter what we’re faced with in the future, we’ll remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability and will continue to invest, innovate and obsess over our progress each year, with the same intensity and focus that has defined Amazon from day one."
Carbon management and renewable energy procurement
Pushing towards a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, Amazon's journey involves not just managing current emissions but also incorporating sustainability into procurement strategies.
Last year saw an increase in emissions to 68.25 MTCO₂e from the previous year's 64.38 MTCO₂e. Nevertheless, the company's emissions per dollar of sales improved, reducing from 75.6g CO₂e/$GMS to 72.6g CO₂e/$GMS.
Amazon's renewable energy procurement, crucial to its sustainability agenda, achieved a notable milestone by meeting 100% renewable energy goal for electricity consumption globally.
This accomplishment has not only reduced operational emissions but set a precedent for responsible sourcing of energy resources.
Procurement of electric vehicles and innovations
In alignment with its sustainability goals, Amazon's procurement strategies have heavily involved the integration of electric vehicles into its transportation fleet.
By 2030, the company is targeting the deployment of 100,000 electric delivery vans.
In 2024 alone, the fleet expanded from over 19,000 to more than 31,000 vehicles, indicative of Amazon's push towards cleaner logistics solutions.
Additionally, the company has succeeded in deploying 10,000 EVs in India ahead of its 2025 goal.
These moves underscore Amazon's commitment to reducing freight-related emissions through prudent procurement choices and innovations in logistics.
Optimising waste management and circular logistics
Amazon's overall operational sustainability strategies also emphasise efficient waste management and the implementation of circular economy principles within procurement processes.
In 2024, the transition from plastic air pillows to recyclable paper fillers contributed to a 16.4% decrease in single-use plastic packaging globally.
The company also demonstrated improvement in managing non-landfill solutions, achieving an 85% landfill diversion rate, up from the previous years' 84% and 82%, respectively.
These practices highlight the procurement decisions that drive waste minimization and resource efficiency, promoting a circular economy in Amazon's supply chain.
Amazon's procurement strategies continue to evolve, reflecting a broader corporate ethos of sustainability and thoughtful sourcing of both materials and technology, measured not just by environmental footprint metrics, but also by innovations and strategic partnerships formed to address global environmental challenges.
