Trane Technologies's Shift to Circular Economy Metrics

Global climate innovator Trane Technologies has pledged to reduce customer greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion metric tons as part of its goal to achieve net zero by 2050.

The company's dedication to circular practices is embedded in its relationships with direct material suppliers, enabling the procurement of recycled materials, including steel, copper and aluminium.

Trane Technologies has announced new circularity impact metrics, which could help expand its commitment to circular design. 

Converting circular practices into revenue

The company's circularity strategy involves multiple initiatives designed to increase the use of recycled materials and optimise product utilisation.

This is achieved through the redeployment of quality parts and the reduction of material use, alongside smart services, upgrades, remanufacturing and recovery programmes.

The company aims to increase efficiency, improve supply chain resilience and open new and recurring revenue streams.

Trane Technologies's new metrics focus on generating 10% of its revenue from circular products and services and more than doubling the use of circular materials by 2030.

The circularity impact metrics were developed in alignment with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development's (WBCSD) new Global Circularity Protocol, which is the first global voluntary framework for measuring, managing and communicating circularity impacts.

Leadership driving sustainability initiatives

Scott Tew, Vice-President of Sustainability Strategy at Trane Technologies, also co-founded the company's Centre for Energy Efficiency & Sustainability.

He manages forward-looking sustainability initiatives that are aimed at transitioning to more efficient and climate-friendly solutions without compromising health or resource impacts.

Scott is also responsible for climate and energy-related public policy matters at Trane Technologies. He serves as a thought leader in linking public policy, economic impacts and a value stream approach to sustainability.

His recent efforts have led to the development of initiatives including the company's 2030 targets, a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated net zero target and the launch of the company's largest customer-facing commitment to combat climate change.

He serves on the Advisory Council of the Corporate Eco Forum and the Global Sustainability Centre, positioning him at the intersection of industry leadership and sustainability innovation.

Sharing insights at industry events
