Solstice Advanced Materials is spending US$220m to enhance its Virginia facility, aiming to strengthen US defence supply chains and increase production

Solstice Advanced Materials, a global leader in high-performance specialty materials, has announced plans to invest more than US$220m in a new expansion project.

This initiative will create one of North America's most advanced ballistic materials production hubs, while strengthening US defence supply chain resilience.

The company focuses on advancing science for intelligent outcomes, offering solutions for semiconductor manufacturing, nuclear power and healthcare packaging. It partners with more than 3,000 customers across 120 countries, driving innovation through brands such as Solstice, Aclar, Spectra and Fluka.

This investment will expand production at its ballistic fibre manufacturing facility in Colonial Heights, Virginia.

The site is expected to create 100 new full-time jobs by 2029. For more than two decades, the facility has contributed to US defence through its Spectra fibre used in vests, helmets and naval applications.

"Solstice's commitment to Chesterfield is a win for the Commonwealth and for our advanced manufacturing ecosystem," says Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Juan Pablo Segura. Secretary Segura explains

"Virginia's reliable infrastructure, pro-business climate, and world‑class workforce give innovators the confidence to scale critical technologies right here at home."

The investment will enhance the facility with new fibre spinning, composite coating and analytical capabilities. Construction and equipment installation will take place between 2025 and 2029, with project completion expected by October 2030.

"This investment underscores Solstice's commitment to maintaining technology leadership in high-performance protective materials, strengthening US-based manufacturing and enhancing supply chain resiliency for defence-critical materials," adds David Sewell, President and CEO of Solstice Advanced Materials.

"Our advanced fibers and composites deliver critical protection across defence, law enforcement and industrial applications – all of which represent significant growth markets for Solstice."

The expansion is expected to drive significant economic activity within the Chesterfield region, bolstering the local industrial base. By integrating advanced automation and sustainable manufacturing practices, the facility will serve as a blueprint for future domestic production sites.

Increasing domestic production capabilities

The expansion will increase capacity for Spectra and Spectra Shield technologies, resulting in more efficient supply chains. This includes production of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres, which are 15 times stronger than steel and 65% lighter than aramid fabrics.

State-of-the-art research and development (R&D) and prototyping capabilities will increase the speed of innovation cycles. This investment facilitates the faster development of lightweight armour systems and advanced soldier protection solutions.

"Solstice Advanced Materials' expansion in Chesterfield underscores Virginia's leadership in the advanced manufacturing and materials industry," says Governor Glenn Youngkin.

"Their ballistic fibers help protect those who protect us, and this growth reflects the strength of the Commonwealth's talent. Partnerships like this will ensure Virginia remains the best place to build and innovate."

The project solidifies the US military's aim to expand domestic production of advanced ballistic materials. By reducing reliance on global companies, the expansion helps maintain a competitive edge against rising international competition.

Ensuring resilience for local production

The expansion project was supported by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP). Through the Virginia Investment Performance (VIP) Grant, companies creating new jobs gain funding and consulting services to support training and recruitment.

By providing these resources, the state maintains a skilled workforce to develop a resilient region. This collaborative approach ensures that Virginia remains a hub for high-tech manufacturing and industrial growth.

"This expansion reflects our long-term confidence in the Commonwealth of Virginia and our commitment to advancing America's defence industrial base," comments Lawrence Kast, Senior Vice President, Global Government Relations, Solstice Advanced Materials.

Lawrence says "We're grateful for the collaborative support from state and local leaders, whose partnership ensures that the critical materials needed for national defence continue to be produced here in the United States."

Through local government support and this significant investment, the region will see a boost in streamlined production. This move ultimately supports the procurement of essential military materials from domestic sources.
