Global giants Siemens, Airbus and Capgemini join forces to target decarbonisation
Global giants Siemens, Airbus and Capgemini join forces to target decarbonisation at four Airbus industrial sites in the US and UK

When three companies the size of Siemens, Airbus and Capgemini join forces, the result is a strategic procurement partnership designed to deliver measurable environmental impact whilst driving long-term operational value.

The framework agreement demonstrates how strategic supplier relationships can accelerate sustainability objectives. Led by Siemens' Buildings business and supported by Capgemini, the contract combines expertise in sustainability and digitalisation to deliver a complex, multi-site decarbonisation programme.

Strategic procurement for environmental impact

The partnership supports Airbus' programme to reduce its operational environmental footprint, targeting a 20% reduction in energy consumption and an 85% cut in Scope 1 and 2 stationary emissions by 2030.

Under the framework agreement, Siemens will deploy scalable decarbonisation solutions tailored to selected sites, supporting Airbus in reaching its target of 80 kt CO2e abated annually from 2030. The procurement strategy focuses on replicable solutions including renewable energy integration, smart energy management and low-carbon heat systems, delivered in collaboration with Capgemini.

A masterplan approach to decarbonisation

Siemens will evaluate the sites and create an overall decarbonisation masterplan, including solutions to reduce energy demand and carbon emissions. Energy system twins will simulate scenarios to accelerate the selection of optimal measures and determine the best decarbonisation roadmaps for each site.

The procurement package includes:

  • Heat pumps for decarbonisation of heat production
  • Energy efficiency upgrades
  • Smart metering systems
  • On-site smart integration of renewable energy
  • Smart energy management systems to monitor, control and optimise usage across the sites

About Airbus Commercial Aircraft

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is one of the world's premier aircraft manufacturers, designing, producing and delivering jetliners to airlines across the globe. The division creates a range of aircraft, from the compact A220 series for regional routes to the massive double-decker A380, the world's largest passenger airliner.

Its best-selling A320 family dominates the single-aisle market, while the A330 and A350 wide-body aircraft serve long-haul international routes. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus Commercial Aircraft is the cornerstone division of Airbus SE. It has major production facilities in France, Germany, Spain, the UK, the US and China. The division employs approximately 130,000 people worldwide, representing the majority of Airbus SE's total workforce.

Multi-partner collaboration model

Capgemini has been appointed by Siemens to complete first phase consulting activities, governance definition and support for project management and planning. The consulting firm brings expertise in digitalisation and automation of energy monitoring and measurement systems, demonstrating how tier-two supplier relationships can add value to complex procurement programmes.

Susanne Seitz, CEO of Buildings at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, says: "Our collaboration with Airbus is built on years of mutual trust and shared ambition. It highlights Siemens' capability to deliver smart and scalable technologies and services to reduce the carbon footprint of Airbus."

Implementation timeline and ongoing partnership

The initial phase began in summer 2025 with the development of decarbonisation roadmaps for each site. Engineering studies will guide the implementation, with infrastructure rollout starting in 2026. The contract also includes provisions for Siemens to operate and maintain the new infrastructure, ensuring long-term efficiency and resilience.

The partnership builds on more than 50 years of supplier collaboration between Siemens and Airbus. Previous procurement initiatives have included factory automation, industrial software, safety and security and building automation technology, demonstrating the value of long-term strategic supplier relationships
