Schneider Electric Leads Gartner's Top 25 for a fourth year, credited for its end-to-end resource orchestration and autonomous workforce

Schneider Electric has retained the top position in Gartner's 2026 Global Supply Chain Top 25 rankings for the fourth year. The energy management and digital automation firm was recognised for its three-year Impact Supply Chain transformation programme, which concludes this year.

According to Gartner, the rankings were determined using a composite scoring system. This included peer ratings, revenue, change in return on physical assets, gross margin and environmental, social and governance points.

NVIDIA took second place in the rankings and Walmart climbed 10 places year-on-year to secure third position.

The rankings highlight organisations operating in an era defined by automation and resource orchestration. Procurement functions at these firms are managing increasingly complex supplier networks while integrating autonomous workforce capabilities.

Orchestration and procurement performance

Laura Rainier, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner Supply Chain practice, says Schneider Electric demonstrates how organisations can balance transformation with execution. "Its approach to AI-enabled orchestration, circularity and workforce transformation exemplifies how supply chain leaders are preparing for the autonomous business era," says Laura.

The three-year Impact Supply Chain transformation at Schneider Electric focused on integrating autonomous workforce capabilities. This includes end-to-end resource orchestration across procurement operations.

Supply chain leaders in this year's rankings had to demonstrate operational excellence against global instability. This environment has required procurement teams to build resilience into sourcing strategies.

According to Gartner, leading organisations are adopting network-centric strategies. These strategies aim to reduce cross-border operational challenges through regional sourcing and manufacturing.

Autonomous systems

Gartner identified three macro trends affecting procurement and supply chain operations. Autonomous workforces represent a future where machines and humans collaborate on sourcing decisions.

Network-centric strategies were noted among high-performing organisations. Leaders are focusing on increasing resilience by sourcing and manufacturing in regions where products are sold.

End-to-end supply chain orchestration requires strategic decision-making across procurement functions. "This year, leaders are differentiating themselves by building autonomous workforces, investing in network-centric strategies and orchestrating supply chains end-to-end across increasingly complex ecosystems," says Laura.

According to Gartner, leading supply chains are using artificial intelligence to redesign work between people and machines. "Leading supply chains are embracing AI not simply to automate tasks, but to fundamentally redesign how work gets done between people and machines," says Laura.

Regional sourcing reduces risk

Other organisations in the top 10 include L'Oréal, Danone and AstraZeneca. These firms were recognised for supply chain capabilities that integrate procurement excellence.

According to Gartner, many Top 25 firms are focusing on manufacturing and sourcing in the same region where products are sold. This approach helps minimise disruption associated with cross-border operations.

Procurement teams at these organisations are managing supplier relationships within regional networks. This strategy could reduce exposure to global supply chain disruptions.

The shift towards regional sourcing requires procurement functions to develop new supplier relationships. It also demands investment in regional supplier development programmes.

Amazon were recognised in The Masters category, recognising supply chain excellence

Masters category recognises excellence

Gartner maintains a separate Masters category for organisations demonstrating long-term supply chain excellence. Amazon, Apple, Procter & Gamble and Unilever all retained their Masters status this year.

These organisations have consistently demonstrated procurement and supply chain capabilities over multiple years. The Masters category recognises firms that have maintained performance across different market conditions.

Competing with these organisations requires procurement functions to build resilience and agility. Technological shifts will continue as organisations deploy robots and artificial intelligence sensor capabilities.

Companies will need to prepare procurement teams and organisational structures for these changes. This requires combining technology with human capability to drive continuous improvement in sourcing operations.
