Electric Truck Driving Sustainable Procurement at Mercedes

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team is set to impact procurement strategies with its latest move towards sustainable logistics.
Leveraging all-electric trucks to transport race cars, they become the first in their league to adopt this sustainable approach.
By integrating an electric truck into its logistics chain, Mercedes F1 signals a new era for green procurement in Formula One, a sport heavily reliant on intricate logistics and on-demand movement of high-value materials globally.
Procurement driving sustainability
With its first trial at the British Grand Prix and more recently at the Dutch Grand Prix, Mercedes F1 has walked on the path of green logistics.
Its move to utilise the eActros 600 demonstrates a future-forward approach to High-Value Transportation (HVT) in the automobile sector.
This all-electric vehicle, featuring a potent 600kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, offers a range of 500km per charge, enhancing operational efficiency with quicker turnaround times–achieving a rapid charge from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes.
The use of such technology not only aligns with environmental goals, saving up to 80% CO₂ emissions compared to traditional diesel options, but it also places procurement managers and supply chain specialists in a position to reconsider its logistics strategies and sourcing practices.
A legacy of green initiatives
Mercedes F1's continual commitment to minimising its carbon footprint is evident in its procurement choices, including its transition to HVO100 biofuel, achieving significant coverage across European logistics operations by 2024.
Its goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. The reliance on electric vehicles to reduce and manage Scope 3 emissions illustrates a shift towards accountable and environmentally conscious procurement methodologies.
Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability for Mercedes F1, says: "As a team, our commitment to sustainability means that we rethink how we move, not just how we race."
The statement highlights the crucial role of sustainable procurement in achieving broader corporate environmental targets.
Implications for the supply chain
Expanding the e-fleet usage across future European Seasons underpins Mercedes F1's dedication to crafting sustainable supply chains that inspire industry-wide changes.
This shift encourages procurement executives to rethink supplier relationships and logistics choices, potentially leading to the development of more resilient and eco-aligned supply chains.
The collaboration with Daimler Truck UK further emphasises the role procurement plays in advancing technology within the sector.
Ash Armstrong, eConsultancy Manager at Daimler Truck UK, adds: "Our partnership with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is key in demonstrating that sustainable, long-haul distribution has arrived with our eActros 600."
This partnership signifies the culmination of advanced engineering and strategic procurement decisions that push boundaries within professional sports and beyond.
As Mercedes F1 progresses towards its vision of being the most sustainable sports team globally, its procurement strategies and supply chain decisions will continue to redefine the standards of efficiency and sustainability in motorsports logistics.
