JAGGAER has assisted in the digital transformation of Kedrion's procurement process, allowing it to concentrate high-value resources on strategic purchases

Kedrion is a biopharmaceutical giant focused on the creation of plasma-derived medicines for the treatment of rare diseases.

Its merger with UK-based BPL (Bio Products Laboratory) in 2022 has resulted in significant growth, transforming the business into a fully-fledged global player in an increasingly-competitive market.

Clearly, in the pharmaceutical sphere, supplier management is crucial to achieving success, but presents a highly-complex landscape as companies look to balance the demands of economic sustainability, quality and ethics.

What's more, the plasma-derived sector in which Kedrion operates presents wholly unique challenges, given the difficulties associated with creating it synthetically.

Digital transformation focuses on strategic value

Partnering with JAGGAER, Kedrion recently embarked on a digital transformation journey with a focus on simplifying procurement processes.

A key objective was to automate activities related to the purchasing of those vital goods and services, allowing the company to concentrate high-value resources on strategic purchases.

Simone Fornai, Global Procurement Senior Director at Kedrion, says: "We believe that efficient procurement doesn't just focus on costs, but adopts a vision that, in line with the company's ultimate goal, aims to meet the therapeutic needs of patients better.

"From this perspective, the role of procurement is to source quality products that optimise the company's performance. I want to emphasise that, while digitalisation is indeed an urgent need for every company today, it is equally true that people continue to make a difference, as technology alone is not enough."

JAGGAER recently demonstrated sector leadership in its latest sustainability report. The enterprise procurement and supplier collaboration company highlighted its integration of sustainability throughout source-to-pay solutions and operations, enabling strategic cost savings, comprehensive risk management and sustainable growth for clients.

Incremental implementation

The ongoing procurement partnership between Kedrion and JAGGAER originated in Italy, where the former's headquarters and three production plants can be found.

The objective was to install the digital management of catalogues and gradually extend this to supplier negotiations and the supplier qualification and onboarding process.

With an incremental approach, some solutions have already been adopted at Kedrion's site in Gödöllő, near Budapest, with a rollout to subsidiaries in the US and UK anticipated over the coming months.

Claudia Cristofani, Process and Systems Associate, Global Procurement at Kedrion, adds: "We chose JAGGAER as our partner for this procurement evolution journey because we immediately appreciated its flexibility.

"It is a platform capable of adapting to our needs and the requirements of a highly-regulated sector, demonstrating great adaptability across various processes."

Over the coming years, Kedrion hopes to expand the scope of the project to its major subsidiaries worldwide.
