Discover how real-time analytics and predictive maintenance technologies are breaking down traditional silos to drive asset performance and cost efficiency

The traditional boundary between procurement and operations is blurring. In the past, sourcing teams operated in a reactive cycle, managing contracts and negotiating prices based on historical spend data while maintenance teams dealt with equipment failures as they happened.

In an upcoming webinar hosted by Procurement Magazine in association with Amazon Business, experts will highlight how predictive maintenance technologies, procurement analytics and cross-functional collaboration are converging to redefine asset performance and supply chain resilience.

At the heart of this shift is the transition from a preventative mindset to a truly predictive one. By leveraging real-time data from internet-connected machinery, organisations can now forecast exact equipment failure windows.

For procurement professionals, this means moving away from emergency, high-premium spot buying and instead planning supplier management strategies months in advance. The result is a dual benefit: operational continuity is preserved and cost control is significantly tightened.

Predictive Maintenance and Procurement Alignment Strategies takes place on September 8, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM BST. Register now to hear from the experts.

Driving efficiencies in the public sector

The theoretical benefits of data integration are already being realised in complex operating environments. A case in point is the East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT), an organisation managing an annual spend exceeding £650m (US$867m) to deliver primary care and mental health services.

Before transforming its approach, ELFT faced a fragmented purchasing landscape that typifies the siloed operations discussed in the webinar. Relying on more than 2,000 individual suppliers, the trust struggled with a lack of central visibility into purchasing patterns. Thomas Morgan, Associate Director of Contracts and Procurement at ELFT, described the legacy environment as a "wild west, chaotic" process that created severe operational inefficiencies.

To resolve this puzzle, ELFT partnered with Amazon Business to consolidate its supplier base and centralise purchasing through a single platform.

The trust successfully halved its active supplier base to under 1,000 vendors, introducing a blanket purchase order system that allows staff to secure essential operational items quickly and efficiently.

The power of instant visibility

Crucially, the transition has replaced delayed, retrospective supplier reports with real-time analytics. By using a centralised digital dashboard, ELFT procurement leaders can now monitor spending patterns, track top-purchased items and audit policy compliance on a daily or weekly basis.

"With the Amazon Business dashboard, the data is there instantly," Thomas said. "It’s seamless, easy to read, and helps us share insights with the CFO and board of directors."

This level of granular visibility has had a direct financial impact. By identifying and controlling tail spend—the low-value, ad-hoc purchases that frequently bypass traditional procurement controls—ELFT has secured more than Ā£100,000 (US$133,400) in annual savings. These funds are subsequently reinvested directly into frontline clinical care.

The trust has introduced curated product lists tailored to its specific operational requirements. This ensures that all purchased items are fit for purpose and meet strict compliance standards—the healthcare equivalent of aligning maintenance specifications with strategic sourcing. For ELFT, the future involves evolving this data-driven framework even further, with Morgan viewing the platform as a long-term logistics partner capable of unlocking systemic efficiencies across the wider NHS network.
