The Estée Lauder Companies has announced plans to strengthen its UK manufacturing supply chain as its Whitman facility in Petersfield marks 60 years of operations.

The cosmetics company will integrate capabilities from Contract Candles, a long-standing partner.

Whitman facility marks anniversary

The Whitman site was established in 1966. It manufactures skincare products for brands including Clinique, La Mer and Estée Lauder, alongside Jo Malone London fragrances.

Whitman operates 24 hours and produces more than 90m units each year. The facility distributes products across the UK, Europe and selected global markets.

It is one of nine global manufacturing facilities belonging to The Estée Lauder Companies. Whitman is the only UK site in the network.

Contract Candles integration details

The Estée Lauder Companies will gain capabilities focused on select luxury candle and home fragrances from Contract Candles, which creates scent diffusers and luxury candles.

The cosmetics company will assume the lease of one of Contract Candles' two UK facilities. Approximately 50 employees will be absorbed into the workforce over time.

The integration brings research and development capabilities and quality capabilities. The UK will become the primary manufacturing base for The Estée Lauder Companies' candles portfolio, including AERIN, TOM FORD and Jo Malone London.

The investment provides The Estée Lauder Companies with more operational control over production lines. Moving manufacturing in-house will deliver long-term resilience for the company.

Investment in British manufacturing

"The UK plays a significant role in our global manufacturing network, and this investment in candle and home fragrance manufacturing underscores our continued commitment to British craftsmanship and innovation," explained Roberto Canevari, Executive Vice President, Chief Value Chain Officer at The Estée Lauder Companies, during the Whitman 60th anniversary celebration.

"Bringing these activities more closely into our manufacturing network will strengthen resilience and support our ability to continue delivering the exceptional quality and artistry that define our brands."

According to the company, The Estée Lauder Companies has invested US$72m (approximately £57m) in the Whitman facility since 2020. The investment has increased automation, quality systems, sustainability initiatives and advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The company has partnered with local universities for STEM outreach programmes. It has also invested in apprenticeships.

The facility integration strengthens the manufacturing ecosystem within the UK. It demonstrates commitment to quality and resilient processes, according to the company.

Growing demand for home fragrance
