The automation firm trains 3,300 workers on supplier conduct while managing a complex supply chain of plastics, electronics and machined components

Emerson manages procurement operations across more than 13,000 direct materials suppliers. The industrial automation company sources plastics, electronics, steel and machined parts through a responsible sourcing policy that focuses on greenhouse gas emissions calculation and human rights due diligence.

According to Emerson's 2025 Sustainability Report, the company has trained more than 3,300 employees on its Supplier Code of Conduct. The training covers sustainability topics related to supply chain management.

Supplier engagement and transparency

Emerson follows a responsible sourcing policy that sets emissions reduction goals for suppliers. The policy requires suppliers to implement labour due diligence practices across operations.

Lal Karsanbhai, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emerson, says the company is strengthening its approach to supplier engagement: "We continue to strengthen our approach to supplier engagement by deepening collaboration, increasing transparency and aligning expectations around shared priorities."

The company works with suppliers to calculate greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain. Emerson's operational emissions account for approximately 2% of its total value chain greenhouse gas emissions.

The remaining 98% comes from indirect activities across the value chain. This could show that supplier emissions management represents a material focus area for the company's climate strategy.

Value chain emissions targets

Emerson aims to achieve net-zero operations by 2030. The target includes a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions relative to a 2021 baseline.

According to the report, Emerson achieved a 49% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2025. The company increased purchased renewable electricity to 56% while achieving a 27% reduction in energy intensity.

By 2030, Emerson aims to source 100% renewable electricity for global operations through grid sourcing and on-site generation. The company is targeting a 35% reduction in energy intensity from a 2021 baseline.

Lal says the efforts help protect customers and enhance supply chain resilience. "These efforts help protect our customers, enhance supply chain resilience and support long-term value creation across our value chain," Lal says.

Product design and procurement

Emerson integrates sustainability into product design and procurement decisions. The company embeds material efficiency and energy performance considerations into procurement processes.

"We continue to embed sustainability into the design and procurement of our products and packaging, integrating material efficiency, energy performance and lifecycle thinking into the decisions we make," Lal says.

The company applies lifecycle thinking to packaging procurement.

Emerson has added water operational efficiency to its Sustainable Building Standards. The standards apply to new construction projects across the company's manufacturing facilities.

The company assessed the water footprint of manufacturing operations to set a target of 10% reduction in water consumption by 2032. According to the report, Emerson surpassed this goal in 2025 by achieving a 12% overall reduction in water consumption compared to 2022.

Emerson deploys an environmental compliance programme as part of its procurement risk management strategy. The programme focuses on regulatory requirements related to air emissions, wastewater discharges and waste disposal.

The company focuses on pollution prevention and risk reduction to minimise operational and financial risk. Emerson operates across multiple industries including chemicals, energy and life sciences.

The technology company specialises in industrial automation, software and enterprise operations. Emerson has more than 18,000 active patents across its global operations.

Lal says the company is focused on enabling customers to optimise operations. "We are energised by the opportunities ahead as we focus on engineering the autonomous future, enabling customers to optimise operations and accelerate innovation," Lal says.
