The Global Procurement Awards celebrate excellence, innovation, and transformation. In your view, why is it more important than ever for organisations to step forward and showcase their achievements this year?

Maybe the reason businesses are focussing more and more on building out stronger and stronger procurement teams and appointing SVP’s and CPO’s to lead such functions is that they recognise that we have some amazing talent and skills all over the world  from leadership to relationships and are ultimately problem solvers, that can not only fix the ‘today’ issues but as I have said before working with our suppliers and partners we can help predict what and how we cope next time.

Whether that be Middle East, Covid, Ukraine, tariffs and/or other more local issues in our respective regions. These awards allow us to “pause for a moment” and help recognise that we are REALLY GOOD at being that cornerstone of our businesses and guiding us all through it, with customer and value at our hearts.

How have you seen the role of the procurement leader evolve from a cost-cutter to a key driver of environmental and social impact?

ESG is no longer a ‘nice to have’ in procurement, it’s a must. And the links between value and vision have never been closer. In terms of the value, we create in business and the vision of our teams, supplier and partners to drive for more efficient, governed, and sustainable practices is a true game changer.

The environment and how we work, from energy security to data security through to people safety and beyond have never been more important and procurement leaders can shape the future.

How can procurement teams use sustainable sourcing and supply chain visibility to turn climate anxiety into actionable, measurable progress?

First step is to measure. We all know and speak about Scope 1, 2 and 3 but how many businesses large or small are actually and actively driving their carbon agenda.

The need for more renewable fuels, like gas turbines, solar, wind and wave technology are huge, but even the smallest business can look now at its fleet for example and start to switch to Hybrid or even full EV, each doing their little bit to help.

At DC Zero we are working hard to promote these technologies and our CSO is leading the challenge on how we can provide powered land for data centres, with a 1:1 back up via renewables where possible.

With categories dedicated to AI and Procurement Technology this year, how do you see cutting-edge tools helping organisations scale their sustainability initiatives without sacrificing operational efficiency?

The first step towards AI for me is three steps back. Its it SO important for any business to firstly get its processes right, then re-engineer those to make them fit for 2030, then look at basic and advanced automation, and then at stage 4 look safely to introduce secure AI support.

Once that is achieved, the power of AI in order to support procurement and supply chain folks is almost limitless. Ref sustainability, if we can link fleet trackers, to fuel pump costs and miles driven for example, but this vehicles represent almost 17% of UK CO₂ emissions alone.

But across a company car and van estate specifically: Around 10.4% of all cars on UK roads are registered to a company, but notably more than half (55.4%) of all zero emission cars are company-registered suggesting fleet buyers are disproportionately driving the EV shift.

Plus company car/van CO₂ emissions fell 5.6% in a recent years in the UK, driven by fleet incentives such as low Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax rates for low-emission vehicles

Whether it’s an agile business or a large-scale enterprise, driving lasting organisational change is difficult. What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to teams trying to get buy-in for high-impact transformation projects?

Be VERY clear on what you are doing and why, then communicate it, and communicate it again with ‘hearts and minds’ at the forefront.

Getting this bit wrong can be catastrophic in so many levels.
