Why Coupa is the Platform of Intelligence and Action

What started as a mission to master business spend has evolved into an AI-native ecosystem uniting procurement, finance and supply chain operations.
For two decades, Coupa has turned trillions in global spend data, spanning more than 10 million buyers and sellers, into actionable intelligence that helps companies see further, move faster and turn market uncertainty into a competitive edge.
Now, Coupa is looking to shape a future in which traditional, siloed business applications simply cease to exist. In this future, buyers and suppliers collaborate effortlessly, guided by intuitive AI agents that ensure every good and service is available exactly when and where it is needed, at the optimal price.
This is the promise of Autonomous Spend Management: a dynamic, interconnected "network of networks" where human buyers and suppliers interact seamlessly alongside autonomous AI agents.
Unlocking the power of community intelligence
Coupa’s cloud-born and AI-native architecture provides the foundational integrity required to power this network. It is precisely why the Coupa AI Total Spend Management platform is consistently recognised as the industry's top Source-to-Pay solution, earning a Leader position in the Gartner Magic Quadrant alongside top rankings in 28 other analyst reports.
Its true competitive edge, however, emerges when this cloud architecture meets the sheer scale of its data. For nearly two decades, thousands of global buyers have contributed their transaction data to the platform, rooted in the core Coupa belief that "none of us is as smart as all of us." This community intelligence has yielded an unparalleled dataset representing a staggering US$10tn in total economic spend. Because this information is entirely customer-permissioned, ethically sourced and securely protected, it stands in stark contrast to platforms that rely on scraped public data. Ultimately, the best data makes the best AI.
With its recent acquisitions of Rossum and Tonkean, Coupa is supercharging that data foundation, transforming its platform into a definitive System of Intelligence and Action powered by an "agentic trade network."
As Coupa’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, Salvatore Lombardo, noted: "We’ve assembled the ultimate procurement toolkit: a US$10tn data foundation, eyes to read any document, intelligence to source smarter, and now the ultimate engine to orchestrate modern, agentic work."
Elevating document processing with transactional AI
A true System of Intelligence requires the ability to ingest, interpret and learn from data without human intervention. This is where Rossum comes in. Rossum provides an AI-first architecture powered by a proprietary, domain-specific Transactional Large Language Model (T-LLM).
While Coupa and Rossum have partnered since 2024 to automate complex invoicing for Accounts Payable (AP) teams, this acquisition natively embeds Rossum’s Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) across the entire Coupa source-to-pay portfolio. By combining Rossum's T-LLM, trained on tens of millions of complex documents, with Coupa’s US$10tn transaction database, the platform gains the "eyes" to read, understand and control data across both direct and indirect spend.
According to Coupa CEO, Leagh Turner, the financial stakes of this intelligence layer are monumental. Having delivered US$300bn in customer savings over the last 20 years, Leagh states: "With Rossum, we believe we can help them save the next US$300bn in five with a system of decision and intelligence that is unrivalled."
Driving multi-agent orchestration and efficiency
If Rossum provides the intelligence to read and decide, Tonkean provides the muscle to execute. A System of Action requires seamless integration, removing the friction of manual human handoffs across disparate corporate systems.
The acquisition of Tonkean, an industry-leading agentic intake and orchestration platform, allows Coupa to offer fully integrated, agentic-as-a-service capabilities. Tonkean wraps seamlessly around a company's existing IT architecture with a 100% no-code process builder and over 250 native connectors, requiring zero "rip-and-replace."
More importantly, Tonkean introduces a natural language interface for users alongside an advanced framework for Agent-to-Agent (A2A) coordination. Alongside Coupa’s Navi agentic fleet, Tonkean connects buyers, suppliers and AI agents in a unified workflow. The business outcome is tangible: it replaces manual data-entry handoffs, slashes cycle times by 50% and saves operations teams more than 30 hours a week.
The ultimate synergy: Unified agentic architecture
When these acquisitions are mapped against Coupa’s other recent activities, including category management tool Cirtuo and AI-sourcing network Scoutbee, the broader corporate strategy becomes crystal clear.
To deliver on the promise of autonomous spend management, a platform requires three pillars: clean, trusted data; best-in-class workflows; and industrial-grade orchestration.
By combining Rossum’s document intelligence and Tonkean’s agentic workflow execution with Coupa's core data, Coupa has moved beyond basic automation. It has built an ecosystem where software does not just record what a business did, it predicts what the business needs and handles the execution itself.
