Interview with Coupa's Dean Bain at Coupa Inspire 2025

As trade disturbances and tariff unpredictability becomes commonplace, businesses are urgently seeking advanced procurement solutions to tackle intricate supply chain challenges.
During Coupa Inspire 2025, Dean Bain, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Coupa's Supply Chain division, shared insights on the strategies helping organisations adjust to a turbulent landscape, while exploring the future of AI-powered supply chain management.
Adapting to a volatile environment
Dean's responsibilities at Coupa cover the comprehensive management of the supply chain division, steering it from product strategy conception to customer success facilitation.
Having been with the company for 18 months, he describes his job as "super dynamic and interesting," managing everything from creating product strategies to achieving customer satisfaction through professional services and support teams.
On the effects of trade disruptions and tariff adjustments, Dean stresses that, although unpredictability is the new norm, Coupa is well-equipped to handle such situations.
"The reality is we've been through many, many times of uncertainty," he reflects. "We're kind of used to it. We've learned that it is the new norm."
"At Coupa, we've been modelling and solving for tariff implications for tax and duty implications for over 10 years now."
This foresight enabled the company to respond swiftly to customer needs, providing immediate capabilities and insights to help businesses understand tariff implications for their operations.
Coupa's efforts go beyond offering pre-existing solutions. The company has simplified processes and developed tools to aid less sophisticated clients or partners who have yet to adopt their technology, illustrating its commitment to inclusivity across varying technological adoption levels.
Utilising digital twins for optimisation
Central to Coupa's supply chain design and planning initiative is the creation of digital twins — intricate digital representations of entire supply chain ecosystems.
Dean expands on the concept as helping companies map "all of their suppliers, their distribution, their operations, their customers," meaning they are able to leverage data to tackle real-world challenges.
This cloud-native system, refined over nearly two decades, delivers dynamic results to more than 300 clients globally.
Dean outlines Coupa's broader mission: "We're on a mission to obviously connect buyers and suppliers. That is our goal."
The platform's core capabilities are geared towards facilitating clear transactions and collaboration on a large scale to enhance efficiency and mitigate risks associated with volatility.
AI innovations: The role of Navi
A notable development highlighted by Dean is the introduction of Navi, Coupa's generative AI agent, which is seamlessly integrated across the entire platform. He describes this advancement as a modernisation of technology interaction, facilitating daily tasks through increased automation.
Navi distinguishes itself with its unique blend of generative AI and mathematical optimisation.
Dean elaborates: "Generative AI isn't particularly good with math and our foundation is built on mathematical optimisation."
"We've taken generative AI and combined it with our mathematical optimisation to provide agents that don't just answer routine questions but can actually build models, compare models and scenarios and produce outputs and produce guidance."
Leveraging peer learning
Dean emphasises the significance of convening industry peers in events like Coupa Inspire: "It's two, three days of action-packed learning, networking and knowledge."
He further highlights the value of a peer-to-peer educational environment: "This is truly a very concentrated group of peers. They've seen challenges like you're seeing, they've solved challenges that you're trying to solve."
This emphasis on shared experiences is reflected in the event's format, with approximately 70% of breakout sessions being customer-led: "You're not hearing from us. We're not here to provide a marketing pitch. We're here for you to learn."
As businesses continue to encounter ongoing supply chain challenges, Coupa's experienced approach, integration of innovative AI solutions and dedication to customer success places the company at the centre of supply chain transformation. With leaders like Dean steering this vision, the procurement landscape promises to become increasingly sophisticated and resilient.
