Dimitris Antonopoulos
Head of Group 3rd Party Procurement at Sarantis Group
Dimitris Antonopoulos's career in procurement began during one of Greece's most challenging economic periods. Joining Sarantis Group 15 years ago after his previous company went bankrupt, he has since built a distinguished career that exemplifies resilience and strategic thinking in the face of adversity.
Starting as a buyer responsible for packaging materials and point-of-purchase components, Dimitris has progressively advanced through various roles to become Head of Group 3rd Party Procurement for ready products, overseeing all products not manufactured in-house by Sarantis's factories.
His journey to procurement leadership, however, began much earlier. With a degree in electrical engineering with computer science, Dimitris initially worked in a family steel agency business before pursuing an MSc in Operations abroad. Upon his return, he spent five years as a project manager at an advertising consultancy – an experience that would prove foundational to his procurement career.
The making of a strategic leader
Dimitris credits his time in that lean environment as pivotal: "Working in a lean environment, wearing many hats – procurement, planning, quality control – and at the same time managing a high volume of projects under strict deadlines, taught me resilience, discipline and the ability to multitask effectively, which is very important at Sarantis. It has given me the ability to lead under pressure and deliver results."
This experience has proven invaluable at Sarantis Group, where Dimitris has witnessed and driven significant organisational transformation over his 15-year tenure. With now two decades of total procurement and project management experience, he has a blend of technical knowledge, commercial acumen and strategic vision to his role.
Driving organisational transformation
Over the past two years, Dimitris has been at the forefront of two major strategic initiatives that are reshaping procurement at Sarantis Group. The first involves the company's evolution from a multi-local structure to a truly multinational operation. "This shift brought together diverse cultures and expertise as affiliates beyond Greece actually became actively integrated into our operations," he explains.
Sarantis is "reshaping procurement, unifying previously separate departments with distinct cultures into one cohesive team," according to Dimitris. The objective is clear: to create a common operating model that fosters collaboration and efficiency across the entire group.
Leading through complexity
Managing such fundamental change presents considerable challenges. When asked about his biggest obstacles, Dimitris identifies talent development as paramount: "One of the biggest challenges is coaching a diverse team of people from different cultures, whilst maintaining consistent service to our stakeholders. So it's about guiding and empowering the people to evolve and deliver at the right pace, but without at the same time stepping in to do the work for them."
Global reach and future growth
What makes the role particularly engaging for Dimitris is Sarantis's expanding global footprint. "The diversity and the global reach of Sarantis allows me to engage in projects across the US, Asia, Australia and other markets, which is very challenging and rewarding," he says. This international dimension, combined with the company's rapid growth trajectory, ensures constant evolution in his responsibilities.
Dimitris anticipates significant expansion in his remit: "With Sarantis's constant growth, I expect also my role to grow and expand significantly. That includes increased responsibilities with new team members, additional suppliers and new emerging market opportunities." His focus remains firmly on managing this growth sustainably โ ensuring scalability whilst maintaining quality and strategic alignment.
The variety inherent in his role is what keeps it dynamic, he reflects: "Whether it's managing diverse teams, negotiating with suppliers or entering new markets and categories, the variety keeps the role dynamic and exciting.โ
