Lifetime of Achievement: Tania Seary, Founder of Procurious
As the President and Co-founder of Procurious, Tania Seary runs the world’s first online community solely focused on procurement and supply chain professionals.
Procurious is an online social network whose goal is to empower a new generation of procurement professionals and to foster involvement and advancement. Tania’s goal is to enhance networking, training and communication, all essential for the worldwide development of procurement and related professions.
She hosts over 60,000 followers and members in 140 countries. Tania has been involved in the industry for over 20 years. After obtaining her MBA at Pennsylvania State University, she became one of Alcoa’s first global commodity managers.
Over the years, she has worked to raise the profile of procurement and supply chain leaders. As the Founding Chairman of three companies specialising in the development of the procurement profession – The Faculty, The Source and Procurious – Tania has made significant contributions.
The Faculty, established 12 years ago, is recognised as one of Australia’s leading advisors on procurement development. It collaborates with prominent organisations to elevate the role of procurement, build high-performance procurement teams and create professional knowledge networks.
Under Tania's leadership, The Faculty has achieved numerous milestones for the procurement profession in Australia. These include the creation of a Procurement Executive Programme with Melbourne Business School, the establishment of a Procurement Roundtable with top Australian organisations, the annual Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) Forum and the attraction of leading global procurement experts to teach in Australia. She also launched the Corporate Board for Social Procurement, encouraging major corporations to allocate spending towards social enterprises.
Tania founded The Source, a specialist recruitment firm for procurement professionals, four years ago. In 2013, she moved to London and founded Procurious.
Speaking to Procurement Magazine, she says the inspiration for Procurious was to create a hub for procurement to develop: “The modern changes and evolution of procurement as a profession were hugely influential in founding Procurious.
“Constant change and evolution meant procurement needed a community where professionals could gather, share ideas and innovations, learn from each other and procurement experts and attend thought-provoking, impactful events.
“Procurement needed connectivity: an adhesive to keep the profession together. That’s exactly what Procurious is. The glue that keeps us in procurement, together. It was as simple as identifying a problem and being driven to solve that problem for the community.
“Nowhere else in the world will you receive access to procurement experts and thought leaders, gain deep knowledge on topics and current events affecting the industry, or be able to network and share ideas with peers in the procurement profession.
“Our ability to offer procurement professionals the tools, resources and support they need to advance their careers truly sets Procurious apart.”
The Importance of Women in Procurement and Supply Chain
Tania also set up BRAVO, a leadership programme committed to helping women in procurement and supply chain get the resources they need to advance their careers and shape a better future. Tania highlights the importance of women having access to tools such as mentoring, peer-to-peer guidance and coaching to tackle the inequalities they face in the workplace.
“I’ve had my share of encounters and challenges with the corporate workplace culture. It’s my dream that we can create a better future culture for women in the workplace,” Tania adds.
“Launching the BRAVO programme has been one of the more significant achievements. It has a bit of personal background mixed in with the chance to make measurable and impactful changes for so many people. It’s one of those things you dream about and think to yourself: ‘What if I could change the world?’
“It’s that idea of thinking big that led me to BRAVO. We want people to think bigger, aim higher and expand their possibilities. We may not be changing the world right now, but we are making a difference and that’s the first step.”
