Amazon Web Services to Support US Homeland Security Measures

Cloud infrastructure Amazon Web Services (AWS) has acquired a new contract with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) worth over US$2.5bn.
AWS has been granted the capacity to deliver an array of commercial cloud solutions under this CSP-provided agreement. These offerings include Anything as a Service (XaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS), alongside training, professional and marketplace services.
Details of new contract
According to documentation released in April by the System for Award Management (SAM), this agreement prioritises commercial cloud solutions.
Under the contract, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will gain comprehensive strategic oversight and deep insight into the provided solutions from Cloud Service Providers (CSPs).
Using graphical user interface portals, application programming interfaces or software development kits, the department will have the capability to rapidly deploy services and resources within these cloud environments.
The agreement consists of a primary one-year term, with the potential for extension via four additional one-year options.
AWS’s contract with DHS is a part of their Cumulus cloud procurement initiative which aims to streamline the process of acquiring commercial cloud services from companies and organisations.
Additional Procurement progress
This is the latest move in a list of recent procurement actions by Amazon itself.
In June, the company released a carbon credit service in order to generate high-quality carbon neutralisation and make credits accessible for organisations regarding climate progress and simplified procurement. Amazon currently has a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Amazon Business also introduced a number of ways businesses and organisations can utilise agentic AI to improve their procurement practices.
Agentic AI excels at identifying patterns within procurement data and providing specific details necessary for informed subsequent actions for businesses.
Amazon Business believes there is a major difference between procurement teams and procurement professionals. These differences include:
- Measuring what’s truly important including spending, cycle time and policy adherence.
- Designing for adaptation and building purchasing workflows for easier compliant paths.
- Investing in supplier relationships so spending can be controlled and volume can be leveraged for better services.
- Automating and ERP integration.
- Leveraging tech solutions to act as a force multiplier for the workforce.
Also, companies can provide their procurement teams with deeper insights into spend concentration, reorder frequency and purchasing patterns by leveraging Amazon’s business analytics.
Shelley Salomon, Global Vice President for Amazon Business, says: "When organisations partner with Amazon Business, they're not just shopping, they're streamlining their supply chain while saving time and money through powerful tools designed specifically for business needs.
"From local entrepreneurs to multinational companies, we deliver what matters most: access to hundreds of millions of items worldwide, significant cost savings year-round and even more convenient delivery helping organisations save time and money, reduce complexity and ultimately grow."
